Important Information
Please make sure your child wears socks on Tuesday for the Mega Party. Our plan is to be outside, unless it rains, so socks will probably get dirty.
Book Orders are coming home today! They are due Friday, November 3rd. Remember, you can order online at www.scholastic.com (class code: GNFMJ) or by returning the order form with cash or check (made out to Scholastic). Thanks for supporting reading in our classroom!!
Math, Science, and Social Studies
We will begin working on our 9 facts in math fluency this week. This is where students begin to have more difficulty so please make sure they are working on these facts at home. Continue to work with your child on their math facts each night. The fact cards are in your child's pencil pouch. Also, continue to work on all previous facts: 1's through 6's and 10's. We will have our accuracy check on the 9 facts next Friday.
Science-What a great week we had last week in Science! Students did an amazing job researching, designing, and constructing their pumpkin catapults. We learned about push, pull, potential energy, and kinetic energy and how each affects our catapults. Our winning group's catapult launched their pumpkin 136 inches!! Students are super excited for our Pumpkin Catapult Olympics Tuesday afternoon. Students will use their catapults to jump 20 books, hit a pumpkin target, shoot through a hula hoop, score a bucket, and topple a tower! It's going to be fun and challenging. We will end the week with completing our Ballooning Spider Stem Challenge.
Reading, Writing, and Word Study
Reading--We will wrap up our look at theme and main idea this week. On Wednesday, we will assess our learning on our first unit of fiction and characterization. Thursday we will begin our next unit, where we will focus on non-fiction. Students will be expected to have a non-fiction book to be reading in class (we will have tons to select for check-outs). In addition, students will be reading books in small book clubs and will be meeting regularly. They will have time to read at school, but they may need to read at home as well.
Reminder--all students are expected to have a "grade appropriate" book to read in class every day. (This means a chapter book or a longer non-fiction selection--not Where's Waldo or a joke book). We do classroom library check in and out each Tuesday and Friday, and each class has a weekly trip to the school library.
Writing--Students will be self-assessing their work on our first writing interim assessment. We will examine what changes could be made to improve writing organization, and later in the week we will be doing a practice writing prompt to put those improvments into action. We will also spend time daily working in Writer's Notebooks, and we will be working on Veteran's Day writing.
