Deserted Font
During the Season of Lent a number of changes are made to our worship service and our to our sanctuary. The paraments change, we stop singing "Alleluia"; and this year, our Baptismal Font becomes an arid landscape. When you worship in the coming weeks there will be a small handout to help further explain the deserted font. Here is a small bit of information to help us begin our Lenten devotion and focus.
Why The Deserted Font?
Physical symbols are powerful. We could talk about our thirst until all our mouths are dry, and still not feel the need. A physical symbol helps us get out of our minds, and feel an effect in our souls.
Shouldn’t there always be water in the font to show God’s never-ending providence?
The deserted font is startling. You are right that Jesus is always present. We have the water that lasts, even gushing up to eternal life. But, the deserted font reminds us that we still have a need for Jesus, and always will. And it is a defiant statement that even in the desert we will survive because our water is eternal. The challenge of faith is to find Jesus even in scarcity. The deserted font is testimony that especially in poverty, wretchedness and trial Jesus is present. It is a symbol of hope in God’s steadfast love when it seems absent or unlikely. It is a symbol of trust and expectation. It is a symbol of our endurance in the face of adversity because God strengthens us.
