Unelected Presidency

  • First President to be elected solely by a vote of Congress

  • His election seemed illegitimate because he had been selected, not elected, as Vice President after Spiro Agnew’s resignation, and because he did not seem very intelligent

  • Granted a complete pardon to Nixon for any crimes, which angered Democrats, who wanted vengeance and accused Ford of colluding with Nixon, who had nominated Ford for Vice Presidency. Ford states that he simply wanted to end Nixon’s agony and let the country move on.

  • These suspicions cast a shadow over Ford’s re-election chances
