Julian Curtiss Student Council

Our Student Council members have developed two main goals this school year:

  1. To research and create school appropriate recess games and create playground norms that can be followed by all students.

  2. Create a campaign to respect and take care of our school property and facilities.

Our student leaders have chosen these goals as a need in our school community. One group of students is working with Mr. Librandi to outline fun and engaging group activities with rules and structures that foster the development of effective social relationships on the playground..

The second group of students is working with Ms. Iannazzo to create a campaign with instructional videos and posters to remind students that when we take care of our shared facilities (classrooms, bathrooms and cafe) we take care of ourselves and others.

Connecting with social-emotional learning theory, our student council members are building the skills they need to strengthen their ability to think critically, carefully and creatively. They increase their self-confidence as problem solvers and take responsibility for the well being of themselves and their peers.

This spring our leaders will transfer skills learned to the classroom and the playground. Success in forming relationships, communicating effectively, being sensitive to each other and getting along with others helps increase academic achievement and decrease behavioral issues.

Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 who have expressed an interest in working with the student council can speak to their classroom representative and join us for our bi-monthly Student Council meetings at 7:30 am on Wednesday mornings. Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 23rd.

Julian Curtiss Service Club

What is Service Club? Service Club empowers students by helping them identify areas of need in our community, state, country or world, and take positive action to improve the situation. The Service Club is open to all fourth and fifth graders and is supervised by our PE teacher Mr.O’Brien and our Fifth Grade teacher Mrs. Stewart .

When students get involved in community service, they not only help others, they expand their worldview, develop empathy and leadership skills, and realize how their actions can have a positive impact. One of the most important reasons for joining the service club is that it gives students a way to give back to their community.

So far this year our service club has accomplished the following:

Cleaning up the school playground

  • Helping set up and run Field day stations for the K-2 students

  • Reading to students at breakfast

  • Making holiday cards for teacher and veterans

  • Organizing Lost and Found Items at school

Collecting donations for organization such as:

  • Neighbor to Neighbor

  • Horizons Program

  • Coat Drive in partnership with a Greenwich High Student who is part of the Boys and Girls Club Keystone Youth Group.
