Message from Geordie

Good afternoon everyone,

It's been a really fun and exciting week here at St Bernie’s. On Tuesday evening our Year 5 and 6 Enrichment Students entertained us with their Night of the Notables Presentations here at school. This was a really great way to finish off their current project and I would like to congratulate all the students who participated.

There was a very high level of engagement, organisation and enjoyment from all of our notables and the night was expertly run and organised by our Enrichment and Science Teacher, Mrs Ethel Murphy – on behalf of all the students and parents, I would really like to thank her for all the extra hours and energy she gives to our students. I would also like to thank the parents, teachers and siblings who came and enjoyed the night.

In community news, I would again like to thank the P&F for their support and contribution to some of our initiatives this year. We have now booked in the Year 5/6 block to have new air-conditioning, the courts to be resurfaced and the Undercover Area to have a new PA and Projector setup. All of this is due to happen in the October holidays, weather permitting!

The new audio-visual equipment will also give us flexibility in the Performing Arts space and with the leadership of Mrs Nila Lemisio-Poasa, we hope to have a regular School Choir for our older students to sign up for and later in the year and an End of Year Christmas Concert. Lots to look forward to!

Some housekeeping -

  1. Haircuts: I have had to speak to a number of students in the past weeks about having ‘over the top’ or aggressive haircuts. Can I please ask parents to use common sense when getting their children’s haircut. The entire uniform policy is designed to stop students from having a competition on who has the best shoes, or hair etc – This takes away from their learning and causes issues. If they want something out there, please keep it to the holidays.

  2. Canteen ordering: Can I please ask parents to only give students enough money for their own recess and lunch. Students should not be buying their friends food as parents need to be able to control what their children are eating.

I hope you all have a great weekend, and I will see you in the drive-through next week!

Night of the Notables

It all started 17 weeks ago with a rubric and a small idea, over the weeks the idea grew with our showcase of notable people in history…

On Tuesday 3rd August, the year 5 & 6 Enrichment students participated in a project called “Night of the Notables” where the students pick a person they are passionate about to research and emulate on the night. These students worked on the project for a semester and finally got to display their hard work to parents and friends last night. Before they went to their classes where they were set up, they each did a short speech to outline who they were, what they did and why the community should come to their stall. This was very exciting and to top it off they also got to present it to their classmates the next day. The students had their own little ‘stall’, board and journal to present their information. People represented were from sports, politics, fashion, science, art, royalty, heroes, educators, environmentalists, authors, music, historical figures throughout time and other celebrities.

This creative project helped the students to develop skills in communication, research, and thinking outside the box. It was a life changing experience and I would like to thank Mrs Murphy and all the teachers and parents who supported us in this learning journey.
