Your JISD Libraries Hard at Work!
JISD Writes Together
JISD Writes Together is a community Program initiative of your JISD Libraries and Friends of the Judson ISD Libraries (FJL) to promote literacy throughout the district.
The JISD Writes Together Program will coincide with Black History Month.
Our activities will center around the book, What Do You Do with a Voice Like That by Chris Barton and will culminate with a virtual author visit on . This is a beautiful picture book about Barbara Jordan, a lawyer, educator, and politician from Texas.
JISD Diversity
JISD Diversity is an ongoing initiative that follows right along with our Read Woke program. We aim to provide reading recommendations and ideas for lesson planning as well as pleasure reading that bring to light the marginal groups of society in an effort to empathize and support these groups.
Our first newsletter, Celebrating Black Authors can now be accessed here.
JISD Read Together
The JISD Reads Together Program will run from March 15 to May 20th of this year. We will read, The Epic Fail of Arturo Zamora by Pablo Cartaya.
Stay tuned for a slew of programming activities for all ages including a poster contest, trivia nights, read-a-thons, makerspace products, and a JISD Community Cookbook.
The culminating event will be a virtual author visit on Thursday, May 20, 2021.
JISD Reads Poster Contest
Calling all artists!
Help us design our poster for our first ever JISD Reads Program. We are having poster contest for our JISD Reads program. The winner's artwork will assist us in promoting our event. Winners will be acknowledged at the author's event on May 20th. Stop by the library is you have any questions.
I would love for one of our students to be the winner for this inaugural event.
Friends of the JISD Libraries
Are you interested in joining our Friends of the JISD Library organization. We started the organization last year and had some joint programming planned for the summer that was cancelled due to Covid. We are reorganizing and trying hard to establish a presence in the district. We need all the support we can get.
Our organization dues are $5 per person or $10 per family. You can also support the organization by purchasing a FJL mug for $12, a FJL mask for $12, pick up both for $20.
Spotlight Reader - Tim Harwell
Mr. Harwell is our spotlight reader! In his own words -
Both of my parents were avid readers, and they encouraged me, so I started reading very young.
In high school I read the usual books. Anything by Tolkien, Harry Potter of course, and any kind of publication about music culture. Lately I’ve been really enjoying memoirs and short story collections. My favorite author is David Sedaris. He writes very personal and hilarious stories. My favorite Sedaris is called “Me Talk Pretty One Day.”
Right now I’m reading a book called Full Throttle by Joe Hill (who is Stephen King’s son). It’s a great collection if you like scary and unsettling stories.
Great Reading Recommendations!
I had the awesome opportunity to hear Angie Thomas, author of The Hate U Give, talk this week. I enjoyed every minute of it. She had great reading recommendation - anything from Jason Reynolds, Nic Stone, Kwame Alexander, and the late great Walter Dean Myers. All of her recommendations are perfect picks for Black History Month. We also have books from all these authors in the library – come check them out. We have three copies of Angie’s newest book, Concrete Rose, which is a prequel to The Hate U Give.
