October Highlights
Dear Ravine Drive Families:
October is here and it seems as if we will finally turn the corner and feel true autumn weather in the coming weeks! I am always excited about this time of year. As the leaves change into beautiful shades of orange, yellow, and red, I find comfort in the many autumn events that take place, such as apple picking, pumpkin picking and drinking lots of apple cider! This year, I am very happy to see the return of many of our autumn school traditions as well!
Month of Kindness: As part of our school's character education program, we will focus on particular themes every month. The focus this month has been on Kindness. Teachers and staff have been helping our students realize how even the smallest act of kindness can mean a lot to someone. We also kicked-off the first week of October by having the students participate in various themed days to recognize the "Week of Respect". During the third week of October, we will be recognizing "School Violence Awareness Week", or as we like to call it at the K-3 level, "Peace Week". Teachers will be infusing various activities that focus on the importance of working together and understanding one another.
Scarecrow Drawing Contest: Throughout our art classes, Ms. Arey is having the students take part in the 2nd Annual Scarecrow Drawing Contest! During art class, students will be listening to a read aloud (selected for their grade level), and will create a drawing of a scarecrow that depicts a main character from the text. Ms. Arey will then create lifesize scarecrows based upon the winning student design for each grade level!
Costume Parade: We are very excited to see the return of the Ravine Drive Elementary School Costume Parade. Weather permitting, we will have our parade take place outdoors on Friday, October 29th. Click here for more details. Your child's teacher will be sending you more information in the coming weeks.
Thank you all again for your cooperation and support as we continue to navigate through this school year!

Dressing for the Autumn Weather
Also, please keep in mind that students are outside during recess and gym class whenever the weather permits. Having an additional layer to take on or off will make them feel more comfortable as they run around and exercise. Students should also have shoes that are appropriate for school.
For more information on the School Dress Code please refer to page 20 of the K-5 Student Handbook.
Nurse Lorenzo's Tips for Good Health
October Tips for Good Health - Hand Washing
Frequent hand-washing is one of the best ways to avoid getting sick and spreading illness.
Follow these steps:
- Wet your hands with clean, running water — either warm or cold.
- Apply soap and lather well.
- Rub your hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails. (Sing the happy birthday song twice.)
- Rinse well.
- Dry your hands with a clean towel or air-dry them.
