2016-17 Homeroom Placement
The end of the year is a busy time with so many fun activities for the kiddos. In addition to wrapping up this school year, we are also beginning to plan for next year.
Each year, the teachers, APs, Counselor and I work hard to place each child in a classroom in which they will find great success. Many factors are considered when making this placement.
As a parent, you know your child the best. If you have information about your child that you feel would be beneficial in making a class placement for next year, please email or send a letter to your child's Assistant Principal or to our Counselor with the information. Helpful information includes: personality, special needs, history, or any other information that you feel would help us make the best teacher fit for your child.
Please know that we do not take teacher requests for class placement.

May Kind Minds Challenge
This month our Kind Minds focus will be on using kind words to inspire others. In the book, Because Bryan Hugged His Mother by David Rice, this story shows how even young Brian can start a chain reaction that brings a bit of joy to people he does not even know. It all starts out one morning when Brian wakes up and gives his mother a hug. A hug from Brian touches many people (and even animals), often in a humorous way. As a school, we will be creating positive quote posters to hang around the fences of our school.
***News from the Library***
All library books are due May 16th. Please help your child turn in his/her books on time. If the book is lost, it must be paid for with cash or check made out to Hamilton Elementary School. Students will not be able to check out books next school year (including at Hamilton Middle School) until the account is cleared.
FREE eBOOKS
Your child has access to THOUSANDS eBooks from the Hamilton Library all summer long as well as National Geographic Kids magazines and books! From the CFISD website, select Parents & Students, Library Resources, Click Here to Find Your Campus Library, Hamilton Elementary. From the library homepage, there are links to all sorts of databases and recommended reading lists. Passwords for the databases will be sent home on a bookmark and available in the front office since we cannot digitally publish them.
If you click on the Catalog tab across the top, change the Material Type to Electronic Book, and click Enter, 477 eBooks (with almost 100 more coming in the next month) will be available. Students will need to know their s# (6 digit student ID number) and password set at school to be able to access these books.
Questions? Contact our librarian at jennifer.lucas@cfisd.net!

Credit-By-Exam Summer Testing
Students in grades K-5 will have four opportunities during the school year to use “credit-by-exam” to accelerate to another grade level. Students will only have one opportunity to test for each grade level considered.
To apply to take the test to skip kindergarten, a student must be 5 by September 1, and registered in a CFISD school. To apply to take the test to skip grade 1, a student must be 6 by September 1, and enrolled in a CFISD school.
Students who earn scores of 80% or better on each component of the credit-by-exam will qualify to advance one grade. Only one grade level may be “skipped” each year. No retests will be given.
If you are interested in getting more information about credit-by-exam, please contact the school counselor, Michelle Erickson, by June May 31st to register. Summer testing for your child to skip a grade for the 2016-2017 school year will take place on June 14, 2015.
If you are interested in getting more information about credit-by-exam, please contact Michelle Erickson, the school counselor, at either michelle.erickson@cfisd.net or 281-320-7055. There are only two more opportunities (June and September) for your child to skip a grade for this next school year, 2016-17. The opportunities for testing in December 2016 and February 2017 are for your child to skip the grade for the following school year.
End of Year Information
Last Day of School:
The last day of school will be June 2nd for all CFISD schools.
From the Clinic:
If your child has any medication in the clinic, please have an adult pick it up on or before the last day of school (June 2). Students are not allowed to transport medication in their backpacks. Any medication that is not picked up must be discarded, it cannot be held over for the next school year.
Moving this Summer?
If you know you will be moving over the summer, please contact our Registrar:
stephanie.burke@cfisd.net or by calling 281-320-7051
Lunch Account
Your child’s lunch account balance will carry over to the same account for next year. The student will use the same number if they stay at Hamilton. If your child goes to another school in our district, their lunch account balance will be transferred. If you have any questions, contact the cafeteria manager at 281-320-7058.
Last Day of School
Backpacks: No backpacks will be allowed on the last day of school. Backpacks and all materials will be sent home with your child by June 1. Students should only carry home report cards on the last day of school.
Report Cards: Report cards will be sent home with students on June 2. Students who are absent the last day of school will be able to pick up their report card and end of year papers from the front desk.
Lost & Found
All unclaimed items in the Lost and Found will be donated to a charity at end of day on June 2.
Message for 5th Grade Parents
Information about Level-1 classes for 6th grade:
Level-1 classes are designed to challenge students beyond grade-level academic courses and prepare them for success in future advanced coursework. They are more rigorous and have an more in-depth content focus than on-level classes. Level-1 classes often move at a faster pace, include different types of assignments, including additional outside reading, and may require more independent study skills.
Students are eligible for Level-1 classes in 6th grade (2016-2017 school year) if during their 5th grade year:
1. The student earns a yearly average of 85+ in the on-level class in the same subject level;
or
2. The student earns Level III-Advanced on the STAAR Reading test, STAAR Math, and/or STAAR SCIENCE tests. This enables the student to be eligible for the Level-1 Language Arts/Reading block and Social Studies, Math, and Science, respectively, if he/she did not already qualify for Level-1 by the end-of-year averages; (if your child qualifies through their STAAR scores, I will be sending a letter home soon indicating this)
and
4. The student has parent permission to enroll in Level-1 class(es).
Please note that it is the final end-of-year average that qualifies your child for any individual Level-1 subject. If your child provisionally qualified in the 3rd nine weeks for a subject(s) area, and that subject drops below the 85 average, your child will no longer qualify for Level-1 in that subject area. On the other hand, if your child’s final average for a specific subject meets the requirement for Level-1, but it did not meet it at the 3rd nine week period, you will be receiving a Level-1 letter for that particular course that your child now qualifies for. You will need to sign that new letter and return it to Michelle Erickson in order for that final placement to be input for your child’s next year’s schedule.
