The Red Velvet Ant
The Wingless female wasps are covered with red hair giving it an appearance of an ant. The male species have wings but cannot sting. The red velvet ant is common in the South Western American and Mexico. The name " Cow Killer" is untrue the name comes from the severely painful sting these insects inflict. As if to say "that hurt enough to kill a cow".
Attaining an approximate length of 0.75 in (1.9 cm)
