Class selection for 2020-2021 School Year
Students who are currently enrolled at Capital High can start selecting classes in Infinite Campus for the 2020-2021 school year on January 27th. Counselors will be meeting with Sophomore and Junior classes to help students select classes. A full schedule must be selected by February 14th, 2020. For more information including course lists, graduation requirements, planning forms and teacher created course flyers and videos, please go to https://capitalhighcounselors.weebly.com
Want to know how your student is doing in school?
Download the Infinite Campus App and log into the Infinite Campus Portal to see live grades for your child. Email: campus@boiseschools.org if you have never set up an account. If you have set up an account and need help with your password/username email: jacqui.rogers@boiseschools.org
Try to have a conversation with your child once a week about grades in Infinite Campus. Notice the assessment grades your child earns and encourage them to reassess within five days if he/she, or you feel they could do better. Notice missing assignments and encourage your child to make a plan for turning in missing work. If you have any questions about grades don't hesitate to email or call the appropriate teacher(s). Together we can support the success of our students!

Career Center Information for February 2020
Seniors:
A big application deadline day is coming soon: February 15 for BSU and ISU and College of Idaho. All materials for this priority deadline must be submitted: transcripts, test scores (on the transcript), application and FAFSA.
If a senior has submitted an application but has not heard from the college, the senior should call the admissions office to find out if the application was received and what is still missing from their application.
FAFSAs can still be submitted. If you need help, please let me know, I’ll be happy to aide you in the completion of this very important form!
So far: 46% of our seniors have submitted a FAFSA! 43% are complete. I’m working with those who do not have a complete FAFSA. Good job, Capital!!
Most students will not receive a financial aid package until the middle of March.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNTS FOR INFORMATION FROM YOUR COLLEGES!!!
Don’t forget to look at the scholarship list on this Google Spreadsheet. There is a long list! If a senior would like me to help them sift through the scholarships to find ones they can apply to, I would be more than happy to help. The senior needs to come in and see me.
We have some specific scholarships for Capital High only students. Those scholarships are indicated on the spreadsheet. Please encourage your senior to apply for these scholarships if they qualify!!
Included in the list is the IDAHO OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP. This is a State of Idaho scholarship that will award student, who qualify, up to $3500 to assist them in going to college. BUT they FAFSA must be completed!!! So please apply for this scholarship and complete the FAFSA!! Once again, if you need help with the FAFSA, I am here to help!!
**As seniors begin getting scholarship notifications, please make a copy of those notifications and bring them into the Career Center. Please include all scholarship awards whether they will be accepted or not. These notifications will be placed in the graduation program!**
Juniors:
We will be completing a career interest inventory the week of Feb. 3. I am hoping that with the inventory students can see what electives for next year would be a good match for them, as they register for classes.
The School Day SAT will be April 14. All juniors will be taking the SAT during the school day. Students can prepare by picking up a practice booklet from the Career Center and by linking their PSAT scores with the Khan Academy on their Collegeboard account. There is nothing at this time that juniors need to do to register for the SAT.
Practice for the SAT: https://www.khanacademy.org/sat
SAT test scores for the School Day SAT will be available sometime in May. I will let everyone know what the timeline is for the release of scores.
I am encouraging all college-going juniors to register for the ACT, in addition to the SAT. The ACT is a different enough test that it’s good for juniors to see the difference and then make a choice in the fall as to whether they would like to retake the SAT or ACT.
Students will need to register on their own for the ACT at www.actstudent.org. There is a fee for this test but families who qualify for free/reduced lunch may pick up a fee waiver from the Career Center prior to registering for the test. Test dates are available to see on the website.
Idaho Higher Education Day will be held at Capital on Thursday, Feb. 13, during 6th and 7th hour. Juniors will have the opportunity to visit with 3 Idaho colleges/universities to learn more about their educational programs.
The PNACAC (Pacific Northwest Association for College Admission Counseling) Spring College Fair will be held Sunday, April 5 at the BSU Student Union, from 1-3 p.m. Juniors are encouraged to attend this event. Typically 50 colleges, mainly from around the Northwest, will be in attendance. It’s a great way to firm up a college list (which they should be putting in Scoir!)
I will be having a College Information Night for Students and Parents on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the CHS Auditorium. While all are invited, this presentation will be especially geared toward juniors. I will discuss the ACT/SAT testing, the application process, scholarships and financial aid. I look forward to seeing everyone there!!
Applications for Boys and Girls State are available in the Career Center. Sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary, students who are interested in a fun and engaging week of running a mock state government with other boys/girls from around the State of Idaho are encouraged to sign up. This week begins June 7-12 for Boys and June 13-19 for Girls on the NNU campus.
There is a fee for this program ($400) but both organizations are helping to make it easier for students to go by providing some scholarship money to students. I encourage any student interested in this program and who feels the fee would prohibit them from going to come and see Mrs. Cupps in the Career Center.
Mrs. Cupps was a Girls State participant in Wyoming and so can speak to the program if you have any questions!! It was an amazing experience for me. I was able to stay on the University of Wyoming campus to experience living in a dorm and I met so many wonderful people that I still have contact with, including my roommate for my freshman year of college. I also was able to meet my counterpart of the position I won in Girls State, one of the Supreme Court Justices of the State of Wyoming!!
Sophomores:
We have completed a Career Interest Inventory and related the results to their registration for next year. As with juniors, I have encouraged students to consider the electives they take based on the results of this inventory.
Sophomores have also been introduced to Scoir.com. Our college-going website that allows students to search for and make lists of colleges they are interested and may apply to in their senior year. Parents are encouraged to get a parent login by contacting me (Mrs. Cupps) at robbie.cupps@boiseschools.org. Just let me know you want a link and tell me who your student is!
Sophomores and parents are welcome to the evening presentation on Feb. 20 (please see above) and to the Spring College Fair on April 5 (once again, please see above!).

Let's Stock Up the Clothing Closet at CHS!
Our clothing closet for students in need at Capital is looking a little empty and outdated. We will be holding a CLOTHING DRIVE at the LAST HOME BOY'S BASKETBALL GAME - Friday, February 7th. During all 3 games we will be taking donations of gently used (or new!) clothing items. If you bring in any amount of clothing to donate you will get in FREE to the game! These items will go directly to our Capital students who are in need. Items that are especially popular are: sweatshirts, jeans, shoes, socks, and belts. Take the opportunity to do a little early spring cleaning and help out our Capital family!
