Horizon Husky Newsletter
April 2021
From the Principal's Desk:
We are excited to finally have grades k-5 back to in-person learning within the last month and appreciate all of your flexibility with these changes. The return to in-person has been a team effort and we want to acknowledge and thank you for your support through this process. I understand this has been a difficult choice for many of you. Thank you all for making a commitment to stay with your choice for the remainder of this year.
Our students are doing an amazing job of maintaining physical distance, keeping their mask on, and working hard in class. Our top priority is keeping everyone safe and ensuring all safety protocols are being followed. Please read through the information outlined below.
Mask Update:
Masks are required at school (including transitioning from mask break back to class).
-Be sure to use a mask that fits snuggly. We are seeing some students who have a mask that is too big and not covering their nose.
-We have pediatric masks on site for your student if they forget to bring one from home.
Please Screen Your Students Before School:
We are required to send students home if they have any cold symptoms. Please keep your child at home if they have any of the following symptoms:
· Fever (over 100.4 degrees F)
· Chills
· Body or Muscle Aches
· Cough
· Shortness of Breath
· Loss of Smell or Taste
· Vomiting or Diarrhea
· Headache
· Sore Throat
· Runny Nose
Our nurse and HSP are here to support you if you are unsure about whether you need to keep your child at home. Please make sure that we have the most up to date contact information on our file.
K-5 School Learning Days and Times:
-Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9:00am to 12:00pm for in-person and remote students
-1:00pm to 3:30pm Remote learning for all students
-Wednesday remote learning for all students
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures for Cars:
Thank you for being patient while dropping off and picking up your student(s). Our first priority is the safety of your student and this does require time. When arriving at Horizon Elementary, our staff will let you know when it is safe for your student(s) to exit the vehicle. During dismissal, staff will check your car plaque and will ask you for the name(s) of your student(s) you are picking up and call them forward. Once they are loaded in the vehicle, you many exit the car line.
If your child’s way of going home changes that day, please call our office before 11:00am so that we can let your child’s teacher know of the changes.
Please note that parking on school campus and picking up your kid(s) is not an option this year. We ask that you follow our dismissal expectations and remain in your car. Parents who are out of their cars, will be asked to go back to your car and join the pick-up lines.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to welcome and dismiss students on days they are expected to be on site. We are all in this together. We can model patience, kindness, and understanding for our students during this challenging time.
Attendance Policies:
For in-person learning, any student who was marked absent without notification from a parent/guardian, the office will call and verify absence. Please call 425-366-3000 to report an absence.
For in-person learning, if a student is marked absent from the morning session but logs in later to Schoology, they will be marked absent/excused with a note stating that they missed in-person but logged in to Schoology later in the day. Our front office will still call you to verify the absence.
For remote learning, a student is still considered present if they log in to the class anytime during the day.
May Supply Distribution:
Wednesday, May 5 from 8:00-6:00pm
This applies to remote students. Check with your child’s teacher if this applies to you. If your family is ever in need of additional supplies, please call our office at 425-366-3000.
When you arrive at Horizon to pick up the materials, please remember to wear a mask, stay in your vehicle, and drive up to the sign. If you are walking, please walk towards the blue gates by the front office. Our front office staff are here to help you get the materials your child needs for them to successfully learn either in-person or remotely.
For those parents who have not picked up their child’s materials, our front office staff will send a robo call as a reminder.
Tech Support:
Is your child in need of a computer or headphones? Does your family need WiFi access? Are you having trouble logging into Schoology? If you need help with technology, please call our school first. Our Dean of Students, Mr. Lofthus, can answer your questions, or get you the support or resources you need. Mr. Lofthus can be reached directly at (425) 366-3021 or email LofthusCE@mukilteo.wednet.edu.
Horizon Husky Jammin' Jamboree:
Every Wednesdays from 11-11:45am, we will look forward to seeing all Horizon students for our Horizon Husky Jammin’ Jamboree. They will be accompanied by our staff: Mr. Lofthus, Mrs. Boyle, Ms. Janna, Ms. Mia and Ms. Paola. The goal here is to incorporate games, leadership opportunities, a chance to hang out with students from the same grade level, and to celebrate the spirit day themes. Please find the zoom link on your teacher’s Schoology page. We look forward to celebrating our Horizon community this Wednesday.
