Dear Parker Middle School Families,
This past week we started the final quarter of the school year. As we look ahead to the end of the year and begin thinking about next year, I’ll be sending information to families and students regarding the course selection process for our current students. Please be sure to check your inboxes on Monday, April 10. Additionally, report cards have been posted to the Portal. If you have any questions about your child’s progress, please reach out to your child’s teacher. If you would like to schedule a time to meet with your child’s teachers, please reach out to the team leader to schedule a meeting.
As you also know, Assistant Principal Peledge will be moving on next year to become a principal in a new school district. As a result, I have begun the process of a search for a new assistant principal. Please check out the search process and timeline here. If you are interested in serving on the search committee process, please look at the dates to ensure you are able to participate. If you are, please put your name on this form. I will also be seeking student representatives to participate as members of the search committee.
MCAS testing continues next week for grades 6 and 7. Please ensure your child receives a good night’s sleep, arrives at school on time, and eats breakfast. Breakfast is served here at Parker every morning beginning at 7:15 a.m. Remind your children to take their time and give their best effort. Students should have an independent reading book should they finish testing early and they are not allowed to have cell phones or other electronic devices with them during testing, which is the school rule we follow every day!
Finally, as I mentioned a few weeks ago, please continue to reinforce our core values of kindness, community, and personal best in conversations with your children outside of school. As the weather warms up (hooray!) and students spend more time outside and in the community, it’s important for them to remember that they build their integrity and character when they choose to act a certain way when adults aren’t present. My hope is that they choose kindness and inclusivity every time. Thanks for all you do to support these moments outside of school too.

Wintertime and Head Lice
Winter is a time that we sometimes see cases of head lice at school. Here is some information that may be helpful:
- Lice spread through head-to-head contact. They need a host to survive and do not live on surfaces for long.
- Remind your students to hang their coats, hats, and scarves in their cubbies and not to share these items. They should also be reminded not to share hairbrushes, barrettes, and headbands.
- Posing for selfies with friends is another way lice may travel head-to-head.
- For students with long hair, it is recommended that hair be worn up or in a ponytail or braid.
- Get into the habit of checking your student’s head for nits or lice, especially if you notice that they are exhibiting behaviors such as scratching or complaining of itchiness.
If you do find any evidence of lice, please know that they do not spread disease and there are effective ways to get rid of the lice. If I suspect your child has lice while they are at school, I will call you to discuss treatment options. Use this link for more information about lice from the CDC website.
