Librarians Zoom

The JISD Librarians have been participating in Zoom meetings each week to discuss ways we can engage our students and provide resources for our teachers in our new virtual learning environment. Some of our library clerks and librarian interns joined us as well.

Faculty Book Club

The JISD Librarians are hosting a virtual faculty book club using the Overdrive Big Read selection, Funny, You Don't Look Autistic by Michael McCreary. Michael is an autistic comedian, and his memoir recounts his experiences in school and life.

Join us on Friday, April 10th from 12:00-1:00 P.M. to discuss the book. Please register in Eduphoria to receive credit.

To read or listen to the book, log into your Sora account or your SAPL Overdrive account. If you need directions to get the Sora app on your phone or laptop, see the intro video below.

Sora Set Up Videos

Sora is the K-12 component of Overdrive which offers a digital library offering both ebooks and audiobooks for our JISD community, anytime, anywhere! Additionally, JISD has partnered with the San Antonio Public Library, so JISD students and faculty can access the SAPL collection without a library card, even those who do NOT live in Bexar County!

This new resource is a project that has been under way since November of 2019, so Sora will be staying in JISD even after this crisis is over! Get to know our newest resource and know that's it's here to stay! Enjoy reading!

JISD Library Services Resource Commercials

Your JISD Librarians have been hard at work providing resources for our students and faculty, so we created commercials to show everyone how to access resources we have. Please view the elementary and secondary commercials below. If you have any questions or need more help with any of these resources, please contact your campus librarian. If you are not on a campus, please contact Lead Librarian, Pamela Thompson, at parevalothompson@judsonisd.org

RME Story Time

Rolling Meadows Librarian, Jennifer Heine, offers two story times each day! The 9:30 story time focuses on pictures books, and for poetry month, she will feature some poetry books. The afternoon story time, beginning at 1:00 P.M., focuses on chapter books. The first title for this month is Dragon Masters; Future of the Time Masters by Lily West. To join, contact Ms. Heine at jheine@judsonisd.org.

VMHS Virtually Hosting Poet Laureate

VMHS will host newly inducted San Antonio Poet Laureate, Andrea Vocab Sanderson, this upcoming Friday, April 3rd via Zoom. Our English students will hear her original Slam poems, get tips, and a writing prompt. Students will have the opportunity to write and perform their own slam poems. Ms. Sanderson will meet with our students for a second time on Friday, April 17th to provide feedback to our students. It will be a great opportunity to kick off Poetry Month!

Mrs. Thompson originally wanted to offer open mic times in the library for students to share their slam poems, but because of the school closure, we have had to adjust, just like the rest of our school and country. We can still share great poems virtually.

Movies by SAPL

Calendar of Virtual Field Trips

With so much information and free virtual "stuff" being provided by a multitude of people and companies, it's hard to sort through and choose the best. HERE is a link to a calendar of virtual field trips offered each school day. Best of all, it goes all the way through May. There are also links to the Lego challenge, as well as well as author and celebrity read-alouds.

Save the Date

Battle of the Books Re-imagined

Since our world has changed and all of our scheduled activities have been canceled for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year, we are adapting. For all of the fifth graders that have been working so hard and reading all of the Battle titles, keep reading and studying! We are planning a re-imagined battle for you whenever we return.

Interested students will have the opportunity to participate in an individual competition using Chromebooks and the game-based learning platform, Kahoot! Keep a lookout for the date, but don't worry we will blast the competition information as soon as we have all the details!
