3rd Grade News
Eagle Elementary - Mrs. Grant (September 25, 2015)
Jog-A-Thon will be September 30 (Thank you to the families who helped with our cheer!)
We have ART this week!
Conferences are next week!
What we have been up to....
National Geographic REACH
We started Unit 2 with the big idea "How do we keep balance in nature?" Many stories and themes during this unit will revolve around population, climate, and taking care of our environment. Our reading skill was Compare and Contrast and Cause and Effect. Thank you for your homework support on Thursday evening. :)
We continued our Following Characters Into Meaning unit . We discussed developing theories about characters, noticing how their actions affect others, making inferences about a character based on their external and internal features, and lessons learned from characters evolving throughout the story. We also finished our first mentor text which will segway nicely into our next project. Rube Goldberg machines... shhh! We also were given an independent reading log where we can track our 'just right' chapter book pages read throughout our week here at school.
We were lucky enough to have Mrs. Culp come in to talk all things local government with us on Friday. She discussed the importance of the local government, attracting future businesses, and keeping our community a better place. Thank you Mrs. Culp!
How Can you Support at Home
Just keep reading and talking about characters! For Social Studies, ask them how they could make Zionsville a better place. See if they know of any community problems they would like to address with our local government.
Word Study - This week we focused on adjectives and their function within a sentence. We made our personal narrative writing stronger by adding more adjectives!
Writing- This week we discussed adding more detail to our writing and this exercise proved to be difficult for many writers. Our personal narrative students will be 'published' next week.
Math —We are in the middle of Unit two in math. We have been working on problem solving strategies using total and part boxes and start and end diagrams. We’ve also introduced function machines where the kids have to find the rule of the machine and put in the correct numbers in the “in” or “out” side. The hardest part is remembering how to find the “in” number. I’m hoping to finish unit two early next week. So please look for a study guide coming home on Friday. I’m planning on the unit two test either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. The study guide will be completely optional and does not need to be returned to school.
Science—We are finished with the Scientific Method and have now moved on to Simple Machines. I will share your child’s Science Notebook at conferences. :) Thanks for all that you do!
