What's Up With the Weather?
On Thursday, January 11, the following email was sent to students, parents, and adults registered to receive alerts and emails from ThrillShare:
Wildcat Parents/Guardians/Adults,
With the weather conditions in the upcoming forecast (snow, wind, extremely cold temperatures), the Building Principals have asked teachers to prepare Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) lessons for students to complete in core content areas (English, Math, Science, Social Studies) if school is not in session and the District utilizes an AMI day.
AMI assignments for K-8 students will be paper packets, while HS assignments will be a mix of online and paper assignments. If school is not in session, the nature of the day (Snow Day = no assignments / AMI = complete AMI assignments) will be indicated in the alert.
The following list of radio and television stations will be notified and will announce school closings: KMMO - 102.9 FM; KMMO - 1300 FM; KRES - 104.7 FM; KMZU - 100.7 FM; Thrillshare; Marshall Democrat News Website; District Social Media & Website.
Thank you, and have a great day -
Slater Schools
So...what does all of this mean?
AMI stands for Alternative Methods of Instruction. An AMI day is a day in which school is cancelled (e.g. in the case of inclement weather) but students do not have to make up the day (later in the calendar) because they will be provided the opportunity to complete “Weather Work” assignments over a specified period.
Snow Day vs. AMI Day
If school is cancelled, the alert will include the distinction about whether the day will be counted as a Snow Day (no work assigned during the day out) or an AMI day (students are expected to complete 'Weather Work' assignments - Students will have paper assignments and/or online work.
Do You Know Someone Under The Age Of Five?
This is a FANTASTIC opportunity for all children under the age of 5 in Missouri! Please share this information with anyone that may have a child from 0-5 years. They will receive a FREE book every month mailed directly to their home until they are 5 years old!
Principal's 100 Club
Do you want to be a part of the "Principal's 100 Club"? Students that earn positive referrals from staff will have the chance to win prizes throughout the school year!
Here is how it works:
- Earn a positive referral from a staff member and bring it to Ms. Drummond in the office.
- The student earning the positive referral will draw a number from 1-100.
- The student's name will be placed on the number drawn on the "Principal's 100 Club" bulletin board.
- Once there are 10 squares in a row that are filled with student names, those 10 students and the teachers that referred them will win a prize!
The next prize will be a hot cocoa party & pajamas for our 10 winners! Let's start earning those positive referrals!
Student Drop Off Procedures
Please remember that for the safety and organization of our school, parents are not allowed to enter the classroom/building when dropping off or picking up students. We ask that you to drop your students off at the door and staff members will assist students from there.
Please let anyone else that may be dropping off or picking up your student know what the procedure is.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Illness Policy
A reminder of our Student Handbook policy if your child becomes sick during school:
ILLNESS
A phone call home must be made by school personnel through the appropriate office in order for a student to check out due to medical/illness conditions.
a. If a student contacts a parent/grandparent/guardian on their own without going through the appropriate office, he/she will be written up for DEFIANCE OF AUTHORITY/INSUBORDINATION.
b. All students should have an emergency contact on file that can pick them up from school within 30 minutes of being called.
Are cell phones allowed?
If a student is using one of these devices when they aren't supposed to, the student will be asked to bring the device to the office and the handbook referral process will be followed.
*UPDATE (9/18/23)-- JH students-- Please do not AirDrop photos during lunch. Teachers have asked you to stop and this is considered your warning. If this continues, your phone privileges
during lunch will be taken away.
What if I am tardy?
The handbook says:

Good Standing
To be considered a student in good standing, a student must not be in violation of the attendance policy, have outstanding discipline referrals OR appear on the current F list.
In order to participate in extracurricular events including (but not limited to): dances, field trips, school-sanctioned sports events; a student must be in good standing.
Students in grades 6-12 that are not in good standing will have closed lunch and be required
to sign in daily in the cafeteria.
How Do I Know If I Am In Good Standing?
Eligibility checks are done every two weeks throughout the school year to determine whether or not a student is in good standing. To be in good standing, a student cannot have any Fs or have an attendance rate lower than 90%.
If you are not in good standing when the eligibility check is done, you are not allowed to participate in or attend extra-curricular activities.
**The next check will be done next Tuesday, February 20, 2024.**
