Getting to know Mrs. Hawker

Hello! My name is Sara Hawker, and I will be your child's 4th grade teacher this year! I am so excited to meet all of you! This will be my fourth year teaching at Forest Glen. Before that, I taught for thirteen years in Illinois. I grew up in Gladstone, Michigan, and attended Northern Michigan University. I live in Howard with my husband Bill and my two children Hannah (16) and Nicholas (9).

Learning is Personal

Fourth grade teachers are gearing up for a year full of learning adventures! As a district, HSSD is moving toward “Personalized Learning.” We are excited to transform our classrooms to make learning more individualized, engaging and collaborative. Your child’s learning potential will be maximized! Our fourth grade team of teachers, Mrs. Kentop, Mrs. Zavernik, Ms. Shipley and I will be working together with math instruction. Ms. Shipley and I will be a collaborative “teaching team” for the other subject areas. This will allow us to make your child’s learning more personal. We are enthusiatic about this change in our teaching practices. We feel fortunate to work with your family this year!

If you can, please sign up for REMIND. This tool will allow you to receive text messages or email messages about important upcoming events, reminders, etc. so that you are never out of the loop! This is a safe/secure service where it only allows me to text or message you, no one else has your number or email. It is a positive tool I use in the classroom to inform you quickly.

1st Homework Assignment...Parents too!

It's important for me to know about your child's learning journey so far! You know your student the best, and I'd appreciate if you and your student could complete the following form by clicking on the link below. You can print it out and bring it to open house, or on the first day of school or you can write your answers on another sheet of paper as well.

Your student will receive 5 Timber Tail Tokens for doing the assignment.

If it is returned to me at Open House-you will get a ten token!

Snacks and Water Bottles

Please send a healthy snack and water bottle to school each day with your child. His/her body needs food and water to stay focused on learning ! Water is the only liquid permitted in the bottles. Fruit juices, propel, gatorade or any other sugary drinks attract ants. Water bottles should be labled and spill proof. I thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Communication is crucial for the success of your child and my teaching. This year I am enthusiastic about the new district initiative to go one on one with students and devices. As you know, your child will have the opportunity to have their very own iPad. Our classroom will transform from the traditional classroom of the past. One of the most important tools we will be using daily is our classroom website. Please bookmark this on your home computer/device as you will rely on it daily for important information concerning homework, tests, upcoming events, classroom newletters and displays of classroom projects.
