Workin' for A Livin' *
People come in to take online courses and licensing exams. They write articles and do research for books. They conduct remote interviews and wrestle with spreadsheets. A surprising amount of the community's work gets done right here.
For job seekers too, our computers, printers, fax machine and WiFi are great resources. Searches range from entry level service jobs to rather high-level technical and professional positions. People come in seeking help figuring out online job applications, resume formatting and a quiet place for a phone or Skype interview. Often, they get more than they bargained for.
Since getting a new job can take weeks or months, we get to know some of our job seekers pretty well. We check in on progress, notice snazzy interview outfits, hand out emergency paperclips and generally root our folks on. Other library patrons offer expert Skype help, career development advice and suggestions about where to look for better jobs. It can become a real team effort. In recent months, we have had the privilege of being part of several successful job search journeys and, while people are happy to have access to all the stuff we have, it is the support that people seem to appreciate most.
Our high-tech, 21st Century world can be a pretty lonely place, especially during stressful times. Fortunately, we at your 21st Century library understand the importance of IRL*** community. Libraries truly are about people first.

** A big shout out to the folks in the Southern Adirondack Library System IT department, without whom we would have many fewer services and many more unfortunate incidents of violence against computers.
