Note from the Principal
Recess Rules! We ask that all children come to school equipped for the snowy months ahead.
This includes a jacket, snow pants, gloves, a hat, and boots. If it is lower than 50 degrees students must be wearing a jacket. Snowpants will be required if there is snow or if it is extremely wet and
muddy outside. Children without boots or snow pants will be asked to stay
on the dry parts of the blacktop. Those students who come prepared to play in the snow by
wearing snow pants and boots will have access to the full playground for their recess! With your
support following these cold weather guidelines, all students will have an enjoyable time on our
playground.
Below is a list of rules that you can discuss with your child:
1. No throwing snowballs.
2. No sliding on the ice.
3. Do not destroy snow forts-this is not respectful…there is plenty of snow for everyone to make
their own forts.
4. Respect other people’s space. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
The temperature guideline is the following:
Below 0 degree temperature or wind-chill - indoor recess
Above 0 degree temperature and wind-chill - outdoor recess
It is principal's discretion for the following conditions:
● Rain or wet snow
● Ice or mud
● High wind advisory
Thank you,

A Note from Mrs. Jacques
What Should My Child be Reading Each Night (or on a snow day)?
There may be nights when your child does not come home with a book or passage in the Reading folder for homework. So what should they read? While physical books are always best, there are many good online options to add variety or encourage reluctant readers. The online options are perfect for snow days when I am unable to send materials for students.
Physical Books
Online
-Books sent home by classroom teacher
Epic! (This is not free after 3:00, but a good option in the event of a snow day. Many students have accounts from their teacher)
-Library books (may need support in reading: take turns if possible or adult reads and asks child comprehension questions/discuss vocabulary)
Just Right Readers - for K-2, short vowels through vowel teams (free online)
-Books you have at home
Half Pint Readers- for K-2, covers short vowels through vowel teams (free online, choose your child’s “level” depending on skills they need to work on)
Phonics Books- Moon Dogs Series- for 3rd/4th grade, covers long vowels with vowel teams (free online to view or print)
Please let me know if you have any questions or if you’d like to know what skills your child is working on in order to match them to a book.

Counseling Corner
Last month, Northview students learned about the character trait of Self-Control. We learned that we are in control of our emotions and can use healthy coping skills to calm down when we have strong feelings. Students learned about the Zones of Regulation, which is a framework designed to foster regulation and emotional control. Students learned about the 4 Zones (Green, Blue, Yellow, and Red) and the feelings that fall into each Zone. Please ask your child about the Zones! Additionally, the Zones framework uses the terms "Expected" and "Unexpected" when referring to behaviors. Students learned that expectations exist wherever we go (school, home, community) and that we have power over the decisions we make. To help teach this concept, we introduced a "Stop, Think, Act" visual. We encourage students to "Stop, Think, and Act" in order to make an expected choice. We also encourage you to use this language with your child at home! You can find more information about the Zones of Regulation by visiting www.zonesofregulation.com. There are also many video options on YouTube.
Our character trait for November is Gratitude. Students will be encouraged to develop an Attitude of Gratitude by participating in daily gratitude challenges. Our daily mantra is "I am grateful. I am present."

Snow Day Updates By Grade Level
Junior Kindergarten
In the event we have a snow day parents will be informed to check SeeSaw for any activities they might like to complete.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten families will be receiving a snow day packet at parent teacher conferences on either Thursday, November 9 or Tuesday, November 14. These snow day packets should be kept in a safe place at home until a snow day occurs. In the event of a snow day, kindergarten students will not be expected to log in for any virtual learning. Instead, kindergartners should work on the paper activities provided for math and literacy. The packets reinforce foundational skills that have been worked on in the classroom. When school resumes after inclement weather, the kindergarten teachers will collect the completed snow day packets. Thank you for your cooperation and support in your child’s learning!
1st Grade
In first grade, in the event of a snow day, your child will complete a packet at home. Please check your child's homework folder for this packet. It will be sent out the night before or a few days before if heavy snowfall is in the forecast. It should be completed and returned the next school day. Your child is also welcome to use i-Ready at home.
2nd Grade
In the event that the winter weather forecast predicts a possible snow day this year, your 2nd grader will be bringing home a “Snow Day Packet” of work to complete. It will include some math, writing, reading, and Scholastic News activities. Please complete as much as possible with your child and return it to school. Your child is also welcome to use iReady at home. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.
3rd Grade
In the event of a snow day, students will be completing the blue packet of materials that was given to parents at parent teacher conferences. Students will need to return the packet on the following day of school.
4th Grade
Due to our unpredictable weather in Wisconsin, we will be sending home a grade-level content work packet. Please find a safe spot at home to keep this packet. When we have an inclement weather day, 4th grade teachers will communicate through both email and Class Dojo to let you know what students need to complete for the day. Once the work is completed please place the packet in your child's home folder and have them bring it to school when we return. We will cover the work on the day we return, and then send the packet home for safe keeping. We appreciate your help with this!
