Spartan Spotlight
December 2022/January 2023
Hello Spartan Families
I am hopeful that everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday weekend that was centered upon connecting with family and friends. As we move into December our fall activities have recently come to a close. In a manner of a couple of weeks we were able to watch an outstanding musical take the stage, have one of our swimmers become a state champion, have our volleyball team reach the state tournament for the first time in over a decade and cheer on our football team compete for a state championship. It was a microcosm of the amazing talent that our students continue to showcase in all of our activities as well as the amazing Spartan Pride that our fans continue to exude. As the winter months roll in I would recommend to everyone to take in a game, a concert or a performance; you won’t be disappointed.
The turning of the calendar to December also means that we start to think about 1st semester wrapping up and 2nd semester getting started. The end of the 1st semester is January 13th and the 2nd semester will kick off on January 17th. With that in mind I would encourage all students to take advantage of Spartan Period which occurs Monday – Thursday from 8:00 – 8:40 am. This is a time when teachers are able to connect with students who have questions about content, need some extra instruction, etc. Also, we are not too far from 9th, 10th and 11th graders selecting classes for next year. Our Counselors will begin working with students on this registration process in late January. Additionally, a short video giving more information about the statewide Choice Ready initiative was recently shared with parents and guardians. I would encourage families to think about what types of classes their students would like to pursue and also which classes would be best for helping them become “Choice Ready.” If there are any questions that arise your student’s School Counselor would be a tremendous resource to help guide you through that process.
On Wednesday, December 21st all of our students and staff will be taking in a presentation from Hunter Pinke. Hunter is a former UND student athlete who suffered a severe skiing injury in 2019 which resulted in Hunter currently being paralyzed from the chest down. Most recently Hunter has been speaking to groups around the country telling his story and his philosophy that “Even when the unexpected happens, there are No Bad Days.” We are looking forward to Hunter being able to share his story of resiliency with us here at Fargo North.
Finally, this year Fargo North has made the FPS Guidelines for Success a focus for all students. This entails: Being Respectful, Being Responsible, and Being Prepared. These traits help contribute to success in and out of the classroom and I would urge all parents and guardians to help make these traits a focus for each and every student.
Sincerely,
Travis Christensen
Principal

Students Visit Jefferson Elementary
Students at North High School visited Jefferson Elementary School and met with 4th and 5th graders about what it means to be a student involved and succeed in the athletic, drama, music and clubs offered at the middle school and high school level. They discussed what it means to make good choices, eligibility, and being a leader in school and within those programs. This opportunity provided leadership roles to our high school students and an opportunity for the 4th and 5th graders at ask questions. Great job to all who were involved.
Going the Extra Mile
North High School math teacher and track and cross country coach Keith Lehman raised $2,115 for North's Open Door Food Pantry. He gathered donation pledges with the promise to run one mile for every $100 raised to ensure that North students in need receive food, clothing, personal hygiene products and other supplies.
Despite the cold and icy weather on November 12, Lehman lived up to his promise and ran 21.15 miles. The Fargo North Open Door Food Pantry uses every penny raised to impact students by providing them with critical needs items with no questions asked.

Parking Update
Please see the attached letter below describing the current and future status of our parking lot construction project.
Fargo North will make 80 additional parking passes available to interested students. A parking interest form will be emailed to students on December 1st at 8:30 a.m. The first 80 students to submit interest will be contacted by the school office and given the opportunity to purchase parking passes. The cost of these passes will be $20.
Parking Reminders
Attention all students who drive to school: with the delayed parking lot project this year, the Fargo Police Department has graciously allowed students to continue parking on 7th, 8th, and 9th Streets on the north side of 19th Avenue. However, if you park on these streets throughout the winter, please keep the following in mind:
- Leave on car length between you and stop signs.
- Do not do U-turns in the middle of the street; space is limited, and this can quickly lead to accidents.
- Don’t park in front of fire hydrants.
- On garbage days (usually Mondays), do not park in front of garbage cans and recycling bins.
INCLEMENT WEATHER
When our winter weather hits, Fargo Public Schools maintains close communication with officials of the U.S. Weather Service, local government, and neighboring school districts in order to make decisions regarding inclement weather and other emergency situations that are in the best interest of the safety of our students, staff and parents. The decision to hold classes is based on the general weather conditions which exist for the majority of Fargo students.
If school is in session, and a parent decides that a student should remain at home due to weather conditions, that decision will be respected by the school. Parents should use their own judgment in determining if the weather is suitable for their children to make the journey to school. It is always up to parents to make the final decision about whether or not to send their student to school if they believe weather conditions present a safety issue. The absence for the day would be considered an excused absence.
If school is called off, parents will be contacted via the automated phone, email and text system based on the contact information supplied to the school office(s). Parents are encouraged to update contact information with the school on a regular basis so we have up to date contact information. This can be done through PowerSchool or by calling the school office. School cancellation information will also be broadcasted via local media, and will be posted across our website and social media sites (Facebook and Twitter).
If weather or a situation develops during the day, and it is determined that an early dismissal is in the best interest of the students, parents will be contacted via the automated phone, email and text system based on the contact information supplied to the school office(s). Parents are encouraged to update contact information with the school on a regular basis so we have up to date contact information. This can be done through PowerSchool or by calling the school office. School closure information will also be broadcasted via local media, and the information will be posted on our website and social media sites (Facebook and Twitter).
For more information please see the school cancellation process on the Fargo Public Schools website.
FPS Delayed Bus Route Plan 2022-23
Last winter, Fargo Public Schools canceled several bus routes due to a shortage of bus drivers. This school year, to reduce bus route cancellations and to still provide transportation to school, FPS will run affected bus routes on a one-hour delay. School buildings will still start at their normal time; families are encouraged to transport their students on time, if possible. FPS realizes that not all families can transport their students if their bus route is canceled; instead, we will offer a one-hour delayed route. Affected students will not be counted tardy due to the delay. Please note that students will still receive their specialized instruction as indicated in their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
If a driver shortage occurs, Valley Bus will notify affected riders of select routes by a voice call, email and/or text message to the contact information on file with the school. The message will instruct the rider that their original route pick-up time will run one hour late. An example would be if a student were to be picked up at 7:55 a.m. at 12th Ave. South and 7th Street, the new time would be 8:55 a.m.
Parents can check their child’s normal pick-up time using the “Bus Route by Address” option on the FPS Transportation website. Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date in PowerSchool.
Post Prom
Post Prom Party preparations are already underway for Prom 2023 (April 15). The party is open to all Junior and Senior Spartans even if they do not choose to attend Prom.
Donations are a huge part of the Post Prom success. In addition to cash donations, we need tons of gift cards for prizes (from $5 all the way up to $1,000). As you prepare for the holidays (and all the way up to April), please keep Post Prom in mind. If you’re able to buy some extra gift cards (ex: Starbucks, McDonalds, Caribou….or anywhere your Spartan enjoys), please have your Spartan drop off the gift cards in the Main Office (PTSA mailbox) or send us an email (SpartanPostProm1@gmail.com) and we can come pick it up from you. If your Spartan drops off gift cards, please include a note with your contact information.
You can also make a cash donation through Power School / School Pay (the same system used for online registration and school lunch payments – directions below). Your donation is potentially tax deductible; a donation to Post Prom is a donation to the PTSA.
Please also ask your employer for donations (goods, services, cash, small, large). See contact info below.
Junior and Senior families – we are hoping for a $20 cash donation from all Junior and Senior families. We will ask again closer to Prom, but if you are wanting to make a donation prior to year-end, here’s your chance.
If you are able to donate $25 or more, your name will be printed in the Grand March program. If you are able to donate $50 or more, you will also be entered into a drawing for VIP seating at Grand March. (If you are in either of these categories, please specifically state how you would like your name to be printed in the program.)
-Log into PowerSchool: https://fargo.ps.state.nd.us/public/home.html
-Click on the link for School Pay in the left navigation pane.
-Select Nonprofit Groups under the Payments menu. Scroll down to Post Prom Donations. Add that to your cart and securely check out.
Checks can be made payable to: Fargo North High PTSA
And mailed to: Fargo North PTSA / Attn: Post Prom Committee

Selective Service Registration
All male students are required by law to register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. To register go to SSS.gov. You can preregister at 17 years and 3 months of age. Why is this so important? If you fail to register you are unable to receive federally funded college loans and grants; are unable to get into federally funded training and certification programs; are barred from all federal employment; ineligible for many state and local government jobs. Spending 45 seconds online registering at SSS.gov can save a man 45 years of headaches and heartaches.

2023-2024 COURSE REGISTRATION
FOUR YEAR ACADEMIC PLANS
Parents/guardians and students can request to meet with a school counselor annually to review, discuss, and revise four-year academic plans for graduation. Families can call the North High counseling office, 446-2412, for an appointment, or students can come to the counseling office to set up a time. FPS school counselors visit classrooms several times during grades 8-12, to develop and revise academic plans. Each year at FNH, students update their 4-year plan during course registration in February.
The first visit occurs during the spring of 8th grade, when all students create their first high school four-year academic plan in the computer program called RUReadyND. After that, students are encouraged to maintain and update the data in their plans.
In February, at registration class visits, students in grades 9-11 are given the resources to count credits, rework their academic plans and establish course work for the following year. During this class visit, students meet individually with their counselors.
One final credit count and review of the academic plan is completed in the fall of 12th grade.
Whenever a student or parent/guardian initiates an inquiry about credits earned, graduation status, or course selection, counselors are eager to discuss academic planning options.
