EMS Newsletter

October 25, 2019

Dear EMS Families,

This week, Margaret Talbot - the Tech Integrationist from EMS - had the pleasure of presenting information about Powerschool to the Engage EMS meeting. She gave a short presentation on logging into Powerschool, adjusting settings to receive email notifications, and how to navigate the Powerschool App on cell phones.

The presentation is linked here (Presentation 10/22/19) and in the list below. Additional information about our digital citizenship curriculum and Powerschool is also available (Family newsletter on 9/13/2019).

Where can I learn more about how to log in to Powerschool?

How can I find student access codes to link my Parent Powerschool account with my child's account?

These codes are held in our student information system. If you have more than one child in the school system, but only one child is appearing, then you will need the other student access codes.

Email Julia Stein at jstein@bsdvt.org OR Call (802) 864-8486 and ask for Julia

Dashain Celebration

I thought everyone might enjoy some photos from our classroom celebration for Dashain. At home, the Nepali students receive tika (dyed rice with yogurt and sugar) from their elders and they liked the idea of receiving tika from their teachers. I worked with Krishna to figure out how to adapt it for our classroom, but Astha Magar really was my guide, sitting next to me and taking me through each of the steps as I appreciated each student. As you can see, the students were inspired to also give us tika and share their wishes with us for the school year and thanks for what we do.

What a special place where we work! I’m grateful to be a part of it.

County-wide Cross Country Meet

EMS hosted the 30th annual Chittenden County Cross Country Meet on Wednesday, October 18, at the Shelburne Museum. There were 224 girls and 331 boys from 18 different schools. The Edmunds girls placed 12th and the boys tied for 2nd. Miles Goldsmith was 1st in the boys race. Congratulations to all the runners on a great season!

Scholastic Book Fair Coming!

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians,

The Scholastic Book Fair will begin in the EMS library the week of November 4th and will be open during the day from 7:45 – 3:45 Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, Wednesday until 2:00 p.m. and Friday from 7:45 to noon. It is a “books only” fair; however, there will be posters and bookmarks for sale.

Please encourage your child to purchase books to read at home (or come yourself) and support the middle school makerspace and library.

Just 20 minutes of independent reading every day will expose your child to approximately 1,800,000 words every year! It is so exciting for so many of them to be able to buy books from the fair.

Thank you,

Carole Renca
