The West Valley Wolfpack Howler
Fall 2016 - Volume 15 Issue 1
Wolfpack Updates
This year has gotten off to a great start at West Valley. From the freshmen-only first day, to Homecoming Spirit Week, and now with the end of first quarter, Wolfpack spirit is evident. Here are a few highlights and two spotlights on areas we are focusing on this semester:
- Approximately 350 students came to the Homecoming dance in the West Valley Gym
- Expanded options for part-time students at Hutch - now 55 West Valley students attend classes at Hutch during the day
- eLearning courses offered periods 3-7 with over 60 students enrolled
- Our School Report Card identified our attendance rate at 90.7% and 4-year graduation rate at 82% for 2015-2016
- During the Blood Drive, West Valley had 40 donors give 28 units of blood, potentially saving 84 Alaskan lives
SSP - Student Support Period:
After feedback from stakeholder groups at all of the area high schools through the high school options work group, the decision was made to put time back into the schedule for students to be able to get support from teachers. This thirty minute period meets every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for a total of ninety minutes, and provides a time and structure during the school day for students to get direct help from their teachers for missed assignments, tests, labs, tutoring, etc. Each semester, students enrolled in a SSP class will earn 0.25 credits based on achieving an 80% attendance threshold. Students who do not meet that target will not earn the 0.25 credit. When you get quarter report cards, teachers will have indicted whether students are on track to pass or fail this class.
West Valley students now have access to the district's Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) network. During SSP classes teachers have been reviewing information about digital citizenship as well as how to enroll in the BYOD network and the necessary forms for enrollment. Click here to review the district information about BYOD, Frequently Asked Questions, and Responsible Technology Use Agreement, Permission Slip, and more. Just as with smart phones and school devices, students are held to the same behavioral expectations with BYOD and the school is not responsible for items that are lost, stolen, damaged or misplaced.

All-State Music Results
Music students submitted auditions for the All-State and All-Northwest Music Festivals earlier this year. We recently received the results for the All-State Music Festival, which will be in Anchorage November 17-19. Students will practice music ahead of time and spend two solid days in rehearsals before presenting a concert as a member of the Alaska state band, choir, or orchestra. The hard work and dedication exhibited by these students is amazing, and the honor of being selected or as an alternate is well deserved as these musicians are truly among the best of the best in the state.
