West Irondequoit CSD update from Aaron Johnson

October 22, 2021

Dear Families,

Today ends the New York State School Board Association's (NYSSBA) Board Recognition Week. Throughout the week, our staff and students celebrated our seven board members with videos and cards to show their appreciation for our team's tireless service and steady governance. Thank you, Board of Education, for helping to ensure every child is welcomed, nurtured, and inspired, especially during these unprecedented times.

Yesterday, building principals presented this year's focus areas to the Board of Education, colleagues and community. Thanks to our new Strategic Plan, this year's focus areas reflect a well-aligned K-12 effort to strengthen areas such as culturally responsive education, communication, data-driven practices, social-emotional learning and many others. Through our planning efforts people asked for clarity, alignment, and cohesion. This year's focus areas deliver all three and more.

Last, a personal story. Earlier this week, my vehicle was rear-ended by a distracted driver at a crosswalk near the main campus of IHS and Dake. Knowing the painful loss our community has suffered in the past, I must share my story. As the days grow shorter and the weather worsens, please stay focused when driving our streets. Whether it's a cell phone, the radio, or others in the vehicle, taking your eyes off the road can have dire consequences. Thankfully, this time, it was just my truck.

Let's commit to putting our children's safety first and stay focused when driving.

In partnership,

Aaron R. Johnson, Ed. D

Superintendent of Schools

We wanted to share details on how we collect and distribute information on community events. Organizations ask us to promote their events, so our students and their families know about them. From tryouts for sports teams to joining clubs, this happens often, and as community partners we are glad to do so. Please CLICK HERE to read our updated guidelines on submitting flyers and click to see this week's flyers. Keep that link handy. We will distribute these electronically to you on a regular basis at that link.
