Message from Superintendent Mueller

Happy Fall!

It is hard to believe that we are already in October. We are so grateful to have returned to in-person experiences across CUSD. Our best efforts to keep our staff and students safely on campus are interdependent on the actions and behaviors of our shared community. Thank you for your continued support.

CUSD Receives World Language Funding!

We are thrilled to share the news that Coronado Unified School District has been awarded a $2.3 million grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA). The World Language Advancement and Readiness Program grant will “establish, improve, or expand world language programs targeting elementary and secondary students in highly military connected schools.” Funding from this grant will provide instructional experiences, TK-12, in Spanish language and culture. These opportunities align strategically with our Long Range Plan to build pathways across CUSD and provide the experiences we want for our students, today, and not wait for Basic Aid funding.

Important Covid-19 Updates

Since the beginning of the pandemic, CUSD has and will continue to adhere to public health mandates and exercise local control when permitted by current guidance.

Absent a public health mandate, CUSD does not intend to require vaccinations for its students. However, families should be aware that the current decision tree allows close contacts who are asymptomatic and vaccinated to remain in school. The decision tree also allows for a nonvaccinated and asymptomatic person to remain in school with required testing (parent consent is required for testing).

In order for us to determine which students may remain in school following a close contact, we will be asking for verification that a student has been fully vaccinated. Importantly, responses to this inquiry will be entirely voluntary. However, if we do not receive verification of a student’s vaccination status, we will have no choice but to treat them as unvaccinated. This means that following a close contact, the student may be sent home and directed to quarantine per the decision tree.

Please complete this optional form to verify your student’s vaccination status. https://bit.ly/3jBGytn

Systems of Communication

We need your input on modes of communication to assist in informing the CUSD community on district and school initiatives and academics (related to last week's Thoughtexchange - see the results here). We will be using your thoughts to help us more effectively and efficiently communicate to and with our families. Your feedback is critical as this work will assist in presenting a comprehensive communication plan to our stakeholders. Please participate in the Communication ThoughtExchange here.

Have a great weekend,

Karl J. Mueller
