Freedmen's Bureau
The U.S Bureau of Refugees helpped former black laves and poor whites in the south in the aftermath of the U.S Civil War (1861-65). This Bureau provided food, housing and medical aid, established schools and offered legal assistance. This was prevented from carrying out its programs due to a shortage of funds.
Civil Rights Act 1866
The Civil Rights Act of 1866 was when the house overrode president Andrew Johnson' s veto of the Civil Rights Bill of 1866. This marked the first time congress legislated upon civil rights . This bill mandated that all persons born in the United States." with the exception of Native Americans were hereby declared to be citizens of the United States.
Black Codes
South Carolina's black code applied only to "persons of color"; Defined as including anyone with more than one eighth Negro blood.
