OTSEGO LOCAL SCHOOLS
Superintendent's Weekly Update - February 5, 2016
The safety and welfare of our students and staff continue to be one of our highest priorities at Otsego Local Schools. We are 100% compliant with all Ohio Laws regarding safety plans and requirements. We updated our safety plans once again in collaboration with the fire department, sheriff’s office, staff, and a company called NaviGate Prepared.
Our Elementary, Junior High, High School and Central Office entrances are locked 100% of the time. I know this seems like we are not welcoming parents and community members into our buildings, but we feel this is necessary to protect our students and staff. All visitors are instructed to enter the main entrance of our buildings and our students are instructed to not let anyone in the buildings through side entrances.
We will once again be taking time during our professional development days to talk with our staff about our enhanced lockdown procedures. The Wood County Sheriff’s Department will be leading this refresher training with our staff on Friday, February 12th. This will be our fourth training on these enhanced lockdown procedures.
We ended the last training with an intruder scenario, which will provide options to our staff that will help keep our students even safer. Our teaching and other building staff members have discussed the enhanced lockdown techniques with students in an age appropriate manner and will continue to do so each year. Teachers, building staff and students will have the option to evacuate, barricade, or use evasive distractions to get away from an armed intruder. (Run-Hide-Fight)
We are required by law to have six emergency evacuation drills, three school safety drills, and one theoretical school safety drill each school year. These drills will allow us to practice our safety plans and incorporate these enhanced lockdown procedures.
Please contact the principal at your child’s school with any questions or concerns. You may also contact me directly. Otsego will continue to put your child’s safety as our top priority.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Kindergarten Students to Sing the National Anthem
Attention all Landowners and Farmers
We have once again been nominated by a local farmer to apply for a $25,000 grant through the America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program. This is sponsored by the Monsanto. The more nominations we get, the better it looks for our grant application.
The focus of the grant will be "Knights Growing Together" and will include students in grades PK-12, teachers/administrators, parents, local businesses, & the community as they plan for, create, & implement a garden on our central campus using raised garden beds. Raised beds & access to the garden will support project-based learning and activities. Learning becomes a relevant & meaningful experience for each student.

LOCAL 4-H Opportunities
The Weston Ridge Runner 4-H group is holding an OPEN HOUSE for any child interested in joining 4-H. We would like to welcome both parents and kids to come see what our 4-H group has to offer. Click here for more information
There are so many fun and interesting topics that you can learn about such as animals, sewing, photography, scrapbooking, woodworking, archery, gardening, science, computers and cooking. These are just a few of the things your child can learn about in 4-H.
Our 4-H group provides a positive and fun environment where kids learn to build self-confidence, communication and leadership skills.
Last year the Weston Ridge Runner’s 4-H Group went to the Imagination Station, we learned about grilling foods, helped out at the Milk Shake barn during fair and had a cookout. As a group project we made no sew blankets. This year we have another fun packed year planned. So if you are in Kindergarten and age 5 up to the age of 19 come see our open house.
Please feel free to contact us with any questions…

Green Meadows 4-H Club is once again opening up membership for the upcoming 4-H year. Due to the recent graduation of a couple long term members, our numbers have dropped and we would be comfortable adding a few new members. Green Meadows has traditionally been based out of Haskins, however, over the last several years, the meetings have been held within the Haskins, Tontogany, and Grand Rapids areas. Anyone is welcome to join whether your child would be a CloverBud (kindergarten thru 2nd grade), a first time 4-H member (in 3rd grade or has never been in 4-H), or a veteran 4-Her looking for a new club. Green Meadows is a smaller club, typically with membership numbers right around 15. Members take a range of projects from cooking to clothing to livestock to pets to muskrat trapping to scrapbooking to independent projects. The list is endless. Shannon (419-356-9401) and Kim (419-205-5939) are the advisors and would gladly discuss the array of projects available for your child to take. For more information regarding this club, its expections, and the benefits of joining, please call or text one of the advisors. Our first meeting will be held on Sunday February 28th at the 4-H Extension Office in Bowling Green so that the kids can review the variety of projects available and the books accompanying each project.
