Why does the math look different?
We do not put a big emphasis on the traditional algorithm at this point. (The traditional algorithm is just the procedure we all learned for calculating using borrowing, carrying, etc.) They will learn this eventually. But going straight to that method, without a lot of experience with numbers, ends up with errors due to not understanding why the procedure works. As a teacher, reviewing that 22-18 does not equal 16 can only happen so many thousands of times before you want to pull your hair out.
You probably aren't even aware of the many times and ways you work with numbers without going through the traditional steps. Counting change, estimating cost, splitting a check - a few of the ways we are mentally able to figure things out without the 'carrying and borrowing'.
We are also working quite a bit right now with money. Please continue to give your kids opportunities to count coins. The nickel and quarter often stump the kids as to which is which. The more they practice the better. I used to give my boys a few coins and if they could count it correctly, they could keep it. Big time incentive :)
