Math with Miss B.

May 3, 2016

Dear Parents,

Tomorrow I will teach the Trade-First Subtraction method to the students in my math class. This method looks very similar to, but is not the same as, the US Traditional Column Subtraction method you were probably taught as a child. The big difference between the two methods is when in the process the regrouping occurs.

In Trade-First Subtraction, students are expected to first do all the regrouping, or trading. Once students have completed all the necessary regrouping, then they focus on all the subtracting. This method is beneficial because students can focus on one skill (regrouping) all the way to completion before switching to a separate skill (subtraction). Check out this helpful video to see this method in action.

If you have any questions or would like me to walk you through the method, please don't hesitate to ask.

As always,

Kelly Burton
