ELA
In ELA this week, we will be busy as we learn more about text features such as graphs, glossaries, charts, and italics. On Thursday, we will complete a "Text Feature Surgery" in the afternoon. We are in dire need of any old, appropriate for school magazines, for our surgery. We will carefully cut out text features from these magazines as we place them exactly where they belong in our surgery booklets. If you have magazines you would love to get off your hands, please send them in so our surgery will be a success! This week we will also focus on using illustrations and images to help us understand text. We will review editing skills such as capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. This is really ongoing for the entire year, but will be a BIG part of this week. We will continue reading the book, The Lemonade War, as we dive further into our Lemonade Stand Unit. Our class is in charge of announcements and some of the commercials that will be used to promote the stand to our school. A letter was sent home a couple of weeks ago on yellow paper to tell you all about the stand we will set up in a few weeks. We are hoping to raise at least $1,000 to donate towards research for curing childhood cancer. We voted last week and our third grade theme for this year's stand is...wait for it...wait for it...we are the Erpenbeck Cancer Crushers! We are crushing cancer, one bad cell at a time! I am looking forward to seeing and hearing the students' ideas for commercials and announcements this week. These are some of the most creative and imaginative students I have taught in my 20 years of teaching. I can't wait to see them get those creative juices flowing as we crush childhood cancer! We will not have a vocabulary test this week, but a vocabulary packet will come home tomorrow. I just want the kids to become familiar with the words in the book we are reading. That's all for ELA for now! Don't forget to send in old magazines before Thursday if you'd like to donate them to our class. Also, we are still accepting donations of lemonade mix if you'd like to send some in.
Math
In Math this week, we are working on Unit 8. We will do some exploring with geoboards and 3-D shapes. We will learn about faces, edges, and sides of various figures. We will end the week with an assessment. A study guide will come home Tuesday and it is due back Thursday so we can review it before our test on Friday.
