Santan Quarterly Report
November-December 2018 - 2nd Quarter
Keep Calm & Storm On!
Letter from the "Editor"... Mrs. Kowalinski
Dear Santan Junior High Families:
Happy New Year! I hope that this “new year” brings joy and prosperity to each and every one of you. Setting goals is an old tradition around the world. It is so wonderful when we can reflect on our goals and see that we have accomplished them later on in the year!
Registration is underway. We are excited to welcome our new Santan families into our school during our site orientation at the neighboring elementary schools. 6th grade orientation is scheduled for January 22nd at 6PM in the gym. If you have any questions regarding our programs for the 2019-20 school year, such as, AVID, electives, student council, etc., please don’t hesitate to call. We are happy to answer any questions you have regarding your children and school.
School Safety
Research shows that strong parent-children relationships are associated with positive outcomes for youth, including higher academic achievement and less involvement in risk behaviors, including sexual activity. Parents who discuss important issues with their children and teens contribute to youth's healthy decision-making. While most parents agree it's important to discuss sensitive issues with their children, many report that approaching topics like relationships and sexuality is difficult for them.
The School Safety and Prevention committee is providing a website resource to our parents at www.azed.gov/prevention-programs/resources . This website contains valuable information and resources for our parents and families. Please take the time to review the website and visit the programs our state department has to offer. Health resources include topics such as Friendship, Dating, and Love; Helping Your Child through Adolescence; and Ready, Set, Listen!
AzMERIT – Arizona’s Statewide Achievement Assessment for English Language Arts and Mathematics
The AzMERIT, formerly AIMS, will be given during the 2nd week of April. If you are interested in seeing the blueprints for the achievement standards, please go to www.azed.go/AzMerit or visit our school website http://www.cusd80.com/Domain/3826 and click onto “standards.” We have recently added several parent resources to help guide you through the new testing protocols. As always, ask your teachers questions regarding the AzMERIT and your administrators. We are happy to answer any questions you have.
Thank you for your generous Tax-credit donations this year. Your donations allow SJHS to provide extra-curricular opportunities for your children such as field trips, clubs, and sponsorships. Happiest of holidays to you and yours!
Educationally yours,
Barbara J. Kowalinski
Principal

SELFIE DAY
Students and Staff enjoyed dressing up and taking selfies for Selfie Day!
Boosters wanted to do a fun-draiser a bit above and beyond the “use your cell phone at lunch”. They decided on a SELFIE day complete with a backdrop and props (sorta like a photo booth) which was housed in the Gym, October 31, during all three lunches. Students were allowed to wear a costume to this spirit day as long as it was within the guidelines. By purchasing a $3 wristband, they were able to go into the Gym with their friends, take selfies, and use their phone at lunch.
All proceeds from this event will go towards purchasing a C.O.W. Computer on Wheels for our campus.

AZMERIT STATE TESTING
What is AzMERIT?
The AzMERIT test has been developed by Arizona educators to give teachers a better idea of how students are doing in reading, writing and math.
Why do we need a test?
AzMERIT is like an annual checkup—an important opportunity to find out how your child is doing. Just as doctors check height and weight, teachers use the test to check how your child is doing in reading, writing and math.
Who takes the tests?
Students in 3rd grade through high school will take the AzMERIT test this spring. High school students will be given at the end of their courses, similar to a final exam.
How do I help my child prepare?
All of the work your child has been doing in the classroom this year has helped prepare him/her for this test. Every project, assignment and discussion has helped teach your child critical thinking and problem solving skills.
As a parent, one of the most important things you can do is to talk with your child about the assessment to help minimize any fear or anxiety your child may be feeling. You can even take a practice test with your child at home to become more familiar with the format and types of questions that will be asked. Another important thing you can do, is to check in regularly with your child’s teacher about his/her progress to see where your child needs more help or where he/she is ready to learn even more.
Learn more about the test and what your child needs to know to be successful at

In looking to the next school year, please know we will be downsizing our AVID program to include just the 8th grade. The following year we will not be offering AVID at Santan Junior. Our two main feeder high schools (Basha and Perry), no longer have an AVID program to offer students. We will however continue to teach and support all of our students school wide using proven AVID teaching and Executive Function strategies in our content classes. If you have any questions please feel free to contact our AVID Administrator, Assistant Principal Mary Ann Rezzonico 480-883-4616 rezzonico.maryann@cusd80.com
