Autism Awareness Month
World Autism Awareness Day is next Saturday, April 2nd.
What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a brain developmental disorder caused by genetic mutation and sometimes, by environmental triggers.
What are the common signs of Autism?
Although the autism spectrum is vast, some of the common signs in autistic individuals are repetitive behaviors, hyperactivity, and extreme sensitivity to light, touch, and sound.
HOW TO OBSERVE AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH
1. Find out and participate in local groups activities
2. Read autism books to your children
With the autism diagnosis rate increasing fast, we take these 30 days to celebrate the differences of-, learn more about-, and empower autistic individuals.
Here are some facts about Autism:
Autism means alone- The word “autism” is derived from the Greek word “autos” meaning self. The literal meaning of Autism is “alone.”
Dogs are autistic-friendly- Research has shown that dogs are linked to improved quality of life in autistic children, helping with their aggressive behavior, promoting independence, and safety.
Resources
Ramadan
Here are a few interesting facts about Ramadan:
- Ramadan is a month for generosity and giving. It is known as a month of simplicity and a time to remember those who are less fortunate.
- During Ramadan, people fasting only eat before the sun rises and after the sunsets: The meal taken before sunrise is Suhoor and the meal taken after sunset is Iftar. Children are not obligated to fast until they reach puberty but some choose to observe it in preparation for their adulthood.

Odyssey of the Mind
During the 2021-2022 school year, Montgomery Elementary had five teams competing in Odyssey of the Mind. Each of the five teams were challenged with a spontaneous problem as well as one of the several long term presentations that they worked on over the course of a few months. The five teams took part in the Southeast Pennsylvania Regional Tournament on February 26th. One of our teams won their division at the Odyssey of the Mind regional competition and will be advancing to the state tournament on April 2nd. If they win there, the team will be invited to the national tournament.
The following students are members of the team that has advanced to the state tournament:
Arjun J.
Dylan C.
Sean C.
Derek L.
Benjamin C.
Aarav D.
Justin M.
I'd like to congratulate all of the students who dedicated their time and efforts for their respective team. Good luck to our students participating in the state tournament on April 2nd! #mtlionpride

Kindergarten Registration for 2022-2023 School Year
Kindergarten registration for the 2022-2023 school year in the North Penn School District opens February 1, 2022. Families can register their children online until April 1, 2022. Students must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2022 to enter kindergarten for the 2022-2023 school year. School policy does not allow exceptions to this cut off date.
The online application takes approximately 30 minutes to complete and should be done in a single session. Families will need to provide proof of the child's age, proof of residency, and proof of immunizations. More information about these documents and requirements can be found on the kindergarten registration page.
Following successful registration, individual schools will be in contact with families to schedule Kindergarten Activities. Activities will be conducted at each child’s home school in-person.
New student registration for grades 1-12 begins April 1, 2022. It is strongly recommended that families register their children no later than June 1, 2022 to allow ample time for class scheduling. Re-registration for grades K-12 is ongoing.
