South of the Saltline Theatre presents
A New Satire in Three Acts by Tom Perez

Perez and his South of the Salt Line crew will present “When the Saints Go Marching in at Cockroach Hall,” an updated version of the 1986 “Cockroach Hall,” for three weekends (Starting January 17) at the Mobile Theatre Guild.

Playwright Tom Perez is betting that Mobile is ready for another madcap comedy about … well, it’s basically about what makes our zany city so ripe for satire, including, but not limited to, Mardi Gras queens.

The new “Cockroach Hall” pokes plenty of fun at Mardi Gras societies and other Mobile institutions, Perez said, and audiences should expect a goodly helping of inside jokes.

Some of the plot takes place 70 years in the future, in which everyone wears drab colors, because the Tea Party and other conservative political groups have taken over the country and banned Mardi Gras, Perez said.

The first “Cockroach Hall” play was inspired by the real-life Termite Hall, the historic Greene-Marston House in Mobile; Perez is a longtime friend of the owners. The late author and poet Eugene Walter was a frequent guest, Perez said, and one of the “Cockroach Hall” characters is loosely based on him.
