Higher onboard spending and strong last-minute demand for cruises helped Carnival Corp. & PLC achieve significantly better-than-expected third quarter results, the Miami-based company said Tuesday. The world's largest cruise company posted net income of $1.2 billion, or $1.60 per share, up from $934 million, or $1.20 a share, from the year before. Revenue totaled $4.9 billion versus $4.7 billion last year. In a statement, President and CEO Arnold Donald said the company's Asia operations performed well during the quarter, buoyed by its China program, and its European business saw strong yield and profit improvement.
