MAY 2021 NEWSLETTER
MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
It is hard to believe that we have arrived to the last stretch of the school year! These next five weeks will be filled with end of year events, final assessments, and creating as many memories as possible.
We have made it onsite all year! It has been challenging and rewarding. We have seen so much growth in students, and are optimistic for the school year to come in the fall (after a much deserved summer of course haha).
I will miss being Intermediate principal a great deal. However, I know that the incoming principal (Melissa Holtz) will be an amazing addition to our Solon team. I am also grateful to continue my Solon journey at Lakeview.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or feedback. While I have not been able to be as present at SIS as I'd like to be, I am still here to support each and every one of you the best I can <3
Take care,
Ms. Tabor

4TH/5TH TRACK & FIELD DAY
The Solon Physical Education Department is sponsoring our annual track and field day for SIS students in grades 4-5. The event will be held at Spartan Stadium on Friday, May 28 from 11:30-3:00. Friends and families are invited to attend. Sportsmanship, effort, and self-esteem are emphasized. The event promotes physical, social, and cognitive development of children.
In the event of threatening weather, officials will determine if it is necessary to postpone the event. The rain date will be Tuesday, June 1.
Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle and sunscreen. Tennis shoes and athletic wear are a must. Students are also being asked to wear a t-shirt that corresponds to the color of their special group. Students will also be expected to wear their masks when they are not competing in an event and/or unable to social distance. Out of respect for others, we ask that spectators also wear a mask when social distancing is not possible. .
We are in need of parent volunteers for various field events and other jobs throughout the event. We cannot pull off an event like this without volunteers. Please sign up using the sign up genius if you can help. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F044AA8AA23A5FC1-2021
I am looking forward to a fun and rewarding day for the students.

2021 STEP UP DAY
Returning Edmentum student parents should communicate to Ms. Tabor or the front office by May 14th if they are planning to return to onsite learning in the fall and wish for their child to attend step up day.
5TH GRADE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL!
Mr. Herdliska, the middle school principal, joined Mrs. Pentico last month and introduced himself, the middle school, and getting to know your students. We are busy planning parent meetings, student preparation, and step-up day events. More information will be coming from Mrs. Pentico and Mr. Herdliska regarding the specifics. Until then, please feel free to reach out to Mr. Herdliska, mherdliska@solon.k12.ia.us, or Mrs. Pentico, hpentico@solon.k12.ia.us with any questions regarding middle school transition.
FRIENDLY OFFICE REMINDERS
- Please keep sending water bottles to school with your student(s). Due to COVID, water fountains are still shut off in the building. However, the water filling stations are still operational.
- Communication regarding absences and tardies should be sent to both the classroom teacher and Mrs. Arwine (school secretary).
- Please remind your child to check the lost and found for any of their items they may have misplaced.
MITIGATION
Thank you for your continued support as we approach warmer weather, the end stretch of the school year, and slight mitigation shifts. We have lifted restrictions around student library access and shared use of classroom materials. We will continue to follow health guidelines and assess current mitigation strategies as needed.
At this time, masks are still expected in the building when social distancing is not possible. Classrooms will continue to provide frequent mask breaks, as well as take advantage of the nicer weather with outdoor class time. Masks will not be required during recess when students are socially distanced.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or your child's classroom teacher with any questions.
PERSONAL PHONES & OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Let the classroom teacher or Ms. Tabor know if you have any questions.
Thank you for your support and cooperation!
