Victorian Age
When Victoria came to the throne more rain roads were made to make transport easier and cheaper. During the Victorian Age there was a lot of major developments in medicine and health care. The most important of these was pioneered by Joseph Lister. He realized why people got infections after surgery and it was because of bacteria. In 1870 he introduced methods of sterilizing surgical instruments.
The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution began in Britain in the 18th century. The Industrial Revolution changed how iron and steel were used and the invention of new machines that made every day work allot easier.
Child Labor/Poverty
During the Industrial Revolution, children in the cities were forced to work in factories and shops in hash conditions to help themselves and their families to survive. Outside of cities children were forced to work in mines and all children were paid very little. Some children only 4 years old had workdays as long as 16 hours.
Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens was a very good novelist. Charles John Huffam Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England, on Feb. 7, 1812. When Charles was only 12 years old he woked in a London factory pasting labels. Charles became a newspaper reporter in the late 1820's. Dickens won his first literary fame with The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club. He published it in monthly parts in 1836 and 1837. Charles married Catherine Hogarth in 1836.
