Have an amazing weekend!!
Thank you for your focus with students this last week. I know that we have some new challenges with the Hall Passes, but it will work with our consistent approach. Remember, we are doing it to support our campus supervisors and to support classroom management with students leaving class.
I hope you feel are feeling like you are finding a rhythm. I always struggle fora week or two when school starts as I re-acquaint myself with the schedule of school. While there is plenty of work in front of us, I am thankful for what we have accomplished already. Thank you for a great strong start to the school year.
In The Know
Things You Should Give Up If You Want To Be Successful - Sometimes, to become successful and get closer to the person you can become, you don’t need to add more things — you need to give some of them up. There are certain things that are universal, which will make you successful if you give up on them, even though each one of us could have a different definition of success. You can give up on some of them as soon as today, while it might take a bit longer to give up on others.
Give Up On The Unhealthy Lifestyle
“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” — Jim Rohn
If you want to achieve anything in life, everything starts here. First, you should take care of your health, and there are only three things you need to keep in mind:
Quality Sleep
Healthy Diet
Physical Activity
Small steps, but you will thank yourself one day.
and then...more later.
Drill - Wednesday September 19th, 1st Period. We will begin at 8:40am. Typically we would start five minutes after the bell, but because this is 1st period and we have some students with specific needs we need a few more minutes to make the arrangements for these students and your attendance. A drill schedule for the entire year is forthcoming.
Talent Ed Goals - Please submit your TalentEd Goals as soon as possible so that we can review them in advance of setting up your Goals Meeting this month. We will be sending appointments very shortly. All goals need to be approved by September 30th.
Unit Plan 1 Due End of September - Why? The answer is that as a Curriculum Council we are working to create consistency across departments with regards to what we teach and how. When we know what we are asking students to know and how its taught, we learn from each other and become better at what we do. Curriculum Council leaders will be asked to review unit plans from their respective departments to to identify commonalities in what we teach, when it is taught, and how we go about teaching it. This will begin a conversation about where overlap of common themes, topics, and opportunities exist. It will also provide a chance to discuss strategies for how these lessons are taught. When we all learn from each other our collective effort increases for the benefit of students.
Volunteers - Jill had about 40 parents come to her volunteer orientation sessions this last week. We have a big group of parents who are willing and eager to help. If you need a parent volunteer for anything please let Jill know. Remember all parent volunteers need to have background checks approved by the district. Think about it for a moment...we all have enormous workloads. Is there anything that you are doing that could honestly be done by somebody else? Would an hour of teaching a volunteer to do something save you 20 hours over the duration of a year or a term? I'm just saying, this could be a golden opportunity depending on how you look at it. 40 parents.
Open House October 3rd 6:30-8:30pm - Don't forget to prepare for Open House. This evening highlights our commitment to our families. They are making a commitment to come hear from each of their students teachers. Our commitment to them is that we will be there to introduce ourselves and represent the strength of our staff.
This event is required. It is very important to demonstrate a strong presence on this evening. If you forecast a conflict please make arrangements to navigate these conflicts so that you can attend Open House. Attendance at Open House is the priority.
Last year we had a strong turnout from our families and we expect an equally strong turnout this year. I also received a large amount of comments and feedback from parents last year stating how impressed they were with staff sessions and what a positive experience it was. This year we are planning to add a few added components to this evening. We will be working to highlight our student unions and clubs, community resources, and volunteer opportunities to our parents.
I want to address the impact that is felt when other plans are made on these evenings. It is very important that as a collective staff we present our strongest presence on this evening. I discourage the practice of leaving a note pad for parents to sign if they request an opportunity to connect with the teacher. I am advocating for a live audience.
I will send a separate email with a schedule and helpful speaking points that you can use in your presentation.
ALICE Training - Many teachers in 4J have had ALICE training. Our district will be offering formal ALICE training to staff that have not had it previously. Please let me know if you have not had this training. I will help schedule this for you.
Assembly on Tuesday - We are hard pressed with schedules this next week and we need to shift our assembly on Friday to join our Superintendent request for an assembly on Tuesday. We will use 45-minute double assembly time frame (see schedule on website), but will be one assembly in the gym. Students will go to 2nd period at 9:36am, teachers take roll, then walk students to gym for a 45-50 minute assembly, then after the assembly students will go back to 2nd period and 2nd period class will resume until 11:32am. It is important for everyone to attend, especially since this is the first assembly of the year.
Over Night Field Trip Updates from HR - all staff planning overnight field trips the request must be submitted 30-days before the trip date. This provides both the administrator, and HR, time to review the trip and follow up on any needs or required changes. If requests are submitted without the required 30-days notice, HR will deny the trip request. The only exception to this 30-day submission requirement will be teams/students that qualify for tournaments or competitions in which there was no way to meet the 30-day notification deadline.
HR also wants to share that they are continuing to work on updating materials and the website/GoogleDoc to make the process supportive, more accessible, while satisfying all safety and process needs. It is quite a project with lots of contributors (transportation, special education, insurance, legal, etc). Once they have a final product/process they will present it to principals for questions and to share with staff.
Leadership Plan - Please consider running for a Leadership position here at Churchill High School. It is a great way to be involved in leading the vision for Churchill. Your participation is what makes Churchill great.
Tailgate! - Please spread the word to your students and families that AVID is hosting a tailgate in the courtyard prior to the football game on 9/21. A hot dog meal is going for $5 which includes spirit swag! Join us! The more the better.

Kudos
Lance Eagan - Huge thanks and votes of gratitude for your leadership and inspiration to our young artists. They truly have talent, but you have help bring that to the surface with your inspiration a, coaching, and leadership. Congratulations on your students success.
Ken Pimental - (From Matt Myers) is a helpful, resourceful, and positive. Every time I need some something or have questions, he is available and ready to assist. I am very grateful that he is here at Churchill. Ken you are awesome!
I have to give a huge shout-out to Rosalba Montes and Evan Munger! This was the first year both these teachers had students testing and I hope they were pleased with their results. Scott Schirmer is part of the Math Studies team that had a 99% passing rate and students (on average) meeting or exceeding the international average! Scott, along with Lodi, Rosalba, Alicia, Miiko and Evan really go the extra mile for students and that goes a long way to support our CHS kids in their IB studies. I am very proud of you all.
