Student Engagement
Greetings Tigers!
Student engagement is essential in order for children to get the most out of their lessons, whether they be in person or as part of a Google Classroom. Please take a moment to review this brief video message from Superintendent Donald Fennoy. He shared advice about how parents and guardians can support their children academically as part of his Friday 5 weekly newsletter.
As we close out the month of October, we also want to remind parents that November 4 marks the start of the Make Your Choice commitment to either have your child’s instruction take place via distance learning or in-person. After November 4, you may request a change to your choice if you have an extenuating circumstance. Should that occur, please request a waiver from our school office.
Here’s something to cheer about! Athletes are slowly returning to our fields and courts. Three football games are scheduled for this evening and more tomorrow. Due to COVID-19, spectator protocols have changed and include the pre-purchase of tickets. Guests may purchase tickets online, in advance, using the cashless “GoFan” website or app.
Please also see more spectator protocols here: Spectator Protocols for Fall Sports
The District has also created a video explaining these protocols. Protocols Video
It is vital that both parents and students continue to remain fully aware of the latest updates to important information:
● Student Engagement Reminders: School leaders and teachers are working diligently to provide an optimal learning environment for all students. Students in Distance Learning should have a designated workspace during the school day. Distance Learners are also expected to turn on their cameras during instructional time so teachers can continue to gauge their level of interest and involvement.
● Student Attendance Policy Reminder: All students are expected to attend school regularly and to be on time for classes in order to benefit from the instructional program and to develop habits of punctuality, self-discipline, and responsibility. Each student is required to attend classes one hundred and eighty (180) days each school year. To be in compliance with these attendance requirements, students must not accumulate fifteen (15) unexcused absences in a period of ninety (90) calendar days. Policy 5.09 Absenteeism, excused or unexcused, regardless of the reason, negatively affects the continuity of the learning process. As a student’s absenteeism increases, there is a greater responsibility for the school to deter future absenteeism, and there is a greater responsibility for the student to demonstrate that such absenteeism has not negatively affected performance mastery. Refer to the Student and Family Handbook and Modified Distance Learning Student Attendance.
Staying connected to a student’s academic performance is now easier with the new SIS Gateway mobile app.
Parents and students can receive real-time notifications of grades, attendance, upcoming assignments, test scores, and more helpful information with the SIS Gateway mobile app. The app also includes the student’s virtual ID badge with a photo, ID number, and barcode that can be scanned for school meals.

Testing
The Testing Registration Window opens again Monday, October 26th
Please log in with your child and go to the Student Portal to search using the word “testing.” Select the tile that will appear “Testing Registration.”. This will allow you to acknowledge whether your child will or will not return to campus to complete their State or National Assessment opportunity.
Students coming onto campus to test must follow school and CDC guidelines and wear a mask on campus while following social distancing procedures.
Please note that if you select "No” for ACT-NCR, PSAT NMSQT, FSA ELA or FSA Algebra, you are missing an opportunity to meet a graduation requirement. The FDOE does not have any plans to waive the graduation requirements for 2020-2021.
If your student will need transportation, the school needs to know seven (7) days before the exam date. Once a student has completed a given test for that day, the school would need to provide a location for that student to work the rest of the day, until the PM transportation pick-up.
Please follow up with Ms. Parise, your school’s test coordinator to confirm the testing dates for the assessments you select. A majority of testing takes place at the start of the school day, so please plan accordingly once the dates are released by the school to you.
Community News
The City of Boynton Beach offers diverse internship opportunities to students and recent graduates from accredited academic institutions in an effort to provide them with valuable hands-on experience with which to parallel their academic studies. Students will be exposed to projects in a municipal government setting. As they prepare to commence their future professional careers, it is our hope that this experience will provide them with the necessary tools to succeed in their professions while instilling in them a deeply rooted interest in pursuing careers in the public sector. National First Responders Day: BBPD Gives Back
On Tuesday, October 28, our community partners from the Boynton Beach Police Department, Good Greek Moving and Storage, and Walmart donated their time and supplies to Boynton Beach Community High School.

Health and Wellness
Social and Emotional Learning
Core (SEL) Competencies:
The School District of Palm Beach County follows the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL's) SEL framework, which includes the following five core competencies:
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision-making
This week we are spotlighting SOCIAL AWARENESS, which is the ability to take the perspective of and empathize with others, including those from diverse backgrounds and cultures; to understand social and ethical norms for behavior; and to recognize family, school, and community resources and supports.
A safe, supportive, and equitable learning environment means we:
• Engage in practices that affirm diverse social and cultural identities
• Cultivate a sense of belonging and community
• Provide structures for physical and emotional safety
• Use engaging, relevant, and culturally responsive instruction built on an understanding of how children and adolescents grow and develop socially, emotionally, and academically
• Create space for student voice and agency.
Kindness Matters
Why does Kindness Matter?
Making an effort to act kindly toward one another benefits all of us. Acts of kindness do not have to be large. In fact, thoughtful acts throughout the day can change how you are viewed by others and yourself. Listening, helping, and sharing are three small ways to strengthen our social relationships. Remember--being kind to others means that you are also being kind to yourself!
Pulse Check
Think about yourself. How many of these things are true?
- I pay attention to what other people want or need to try to figure out how I can help.
- I go out of my way to do favors for others, speak up to support them, share what I have, or simply listen when they need a friend.
- I consciously make small sacrifices to be kind to others, like taking a few minutes to do an extra chore or listening to a story even if I’m not in the mood for it.
- I try to think about how much my actions mean to others instead of how much of a burden they are for me.
Let's be kind, reach out, and check up on each other.
Caring First
What is the Caring First site?

BBCHS Choice Program News
BASA Participates in a Drone Competition
BASA students attended VolAero Drone Training last weekend to learn how to map/survey a community with a drone (Mavic Pro Enterprise) to potentially find roof damage or other problems in a real-world scenario.
They practiced different skills from safety management and outlook to team collaboration and drone flying/monitoring. Their work was assessed by Kevin Sanders (VolAero) and Prof. Gustavo Junco, (Embry Riddle Regional Director), with the hope of unlocking a potential path for students in the world of commercial drone flight.
BASA students Ioan Constantin, 12 and Andrew Boden, 11 were chosen for future training sessions and offered job opportunities. Ioan Constantin said, "It was a big surprise to hear that Andrew and I got the job! We are both extremely excited and happy that we were offered this opportunity, especially with a company as big as VolAero that handled the Super Bowl security."

Clubs and Events
On Wednesday, October 28th, this year’s senior class had the opportunity to participate in Virtual FAFSA Night. Boynton Beach Community High School collaborated with representatives from Palm Beach State College to discuss financial aid and the process of filling out the FAFSA. The Palm Beach State College representatives were extremely knowledgeable and presented their information in an engaging and entertaining way. Students and parents were very involved in the Google Meet, asking questions and participating throughout. The evening was a success and is the first of this year’s collaborative events with PBSC. Stay tuned for more dates and opportunities!
Thank you to all who attended.
We are extremely excited to be a part of Project LIT Community, which consists of dedicated teachers and students in more than 1,000 schools around the country.
