APRIL 2021

Big picture

As we approach the return of students to four days a week on April 12th, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past year. No one knew the scope of what we were about to undertake in March of 2020, and it is hard to believe that a year has passed. As we still yearn for things to return to “normal” we want to commend the excellent work of our staff and students over the past year. PHS was forced to radically change how we teach and learn, and everyone worked hard in this endeavor. We also want to thank the parents! You were the glue that held everything together over the past year, and we are grateful for your commitment to your child’s education.

We are looking forward to students returning four days a week on April 12th. We are also happy to offer many in-person events and activities for students and parents as we close out the school year. Please see the most up-to-date list below. (These events are subject to change depending on the status of COVID in the community.)

On March 10th Mrs. DiFazio's Honors Practicum Ethics students welcomed Dr. Sam Horng to their class discussion to talk about bioethics. Dr. Horng is the primary investigator at Horng Laboratory at Mr. Sinai Hospital in NYC who researches the role of specialized blood-brain barrier cells called astrocytes in controlling immune cell entry into the brain during autoimmune attack. As a neurologist and Assistant Professor of Neurology, Dr. Horng offered his expertise as students posed questions regarding the role that bioethics has played throughout his medical career. The Q&A session via Google Meet was a unique, invaluable opportunity and we can't thank Dr. Horng enough for his time, enthusiasm and dedication to making the world a better place.

The “Word” from the High School Libraries

April 4 - 10th is National Library Week. This year’s theme is Welcome to Your Library! This theme promotes the idea that libraries extend far beyond the four walls of the building - and that everyone is welcome to use our services. During the pandemic, we have been going above and beyond to adapt to our changing world by expanding our resources and continuing to meet the needs of our users. Whether our students visit us in person or virtually, we are continually offering opportunities to explore new worlds and become the best at accessing technology, multimedia content and books!

Remember some of the services we offer to students:

  • Curbside Pickup of books and chromebook swaps at your car for virtual students

  • Book delivery and chromebook troubleshooting for in-person students

  • Access to a librarian for research help via email or in-person

  • Don’t know who to go to for help? Email a librarian - we can help!

We encourage all students to visit the library in a safe manner and explore what’s new, and engage with the librarians. You are always WELCOME at Your Library!

Rita Ann Thompson - West Librarian

Lynn Wambach - East Librarian
