Notes from the Principal
Workday Planned
Our first Boone Grounds Workday this school year is planned for this Saturday, October 6th from 9 am – 12pm. Our work on this day will focus on setting up our Monarch Heroes Butterfly Garden, adding mulch to all of the new trees that were planted in 2016, relining some of the raised beds in the garden, and other upkeep work in the garden and outdoor science area.
We will be working in conjunction with the Austin Parks Foundation and their volunteers, so it should be a great day of work and community. Please come out and join us. If you have a few garden tools and/or a wheelbarrow you can bring that would be great. Please make sure they are clearly labeled so they won’t get lost in the shuffle.
The weather should be good and the company will be GREAT!!!! Please join us!!
Campus Advisory Council seeking new members for the 2018-19 school year
The Boone Campus Advisory Council is looking for 2-3 new parents to fill roles on the CAC. We meet once a month from 3:20 –4:20 pm. The role of the CAC is to provide support and guidance over various school related topics and plans. Parent input is extremely valued at Boone and this is an important part of what keeps Boone great. The application for the CAC is attached to this newsletter. Please complete the application and submit it to the main office. The CAC will be reviewing the applications and voting on new members at our October meeting. If you have any additional questions, please contact me directly at 512-414-5311.
IMPORTANT - Front Circle Parking at Dismissal
During afternoon dismissal, the Circle Drive, in the front of the school, is reserved for AISD bus and Day Care bus pick up only. Recently, we have had parents park in the visitor spots in the parking area for a quick exit at dismissal. They are then attempting to leave the lot just as the day care buses are pulling in to pick up students. If you are parked in this area as dismissal begins, you will not be allowed to leave the area until after the AISD and Day Care vehicles leave the driveway.
This additional traffic flow has created a safety concern for our students loading the busses and for those students walking home after school. Please do not park in the Circle Drive for picking up your child at dismissal. If you do, please be prepared to wait until the drive is cleared at the end of dismissal at 3:15 pm.
Flu Shots Made Easy!
Healthy Schools will be at Boone on Thursday, October 25th. The shots are for PreK 4 through 5th grade.
Look for the flyer and registration form in today's Thursday folder. Forms are due by Tuesday, October 16th. We have to know in advance so that they can make sure they bring enough vaccines.
You can also register online at register.austinisdflu.com. If you have any questions about the vaccine you can call 1-800-566-0596.
Science Fair is Coming Soon!
Counselor's Corner
I’m excited to share all the happenings with Boone’s counselor lessons! Our focus this past month has been on self-control and self-awareness.
PreK: They have been learning about self-control with our bodies. They did a fun activity with bubbles to see if they could use their eyes to look at the bubbles rather than their hands to pop them.
Kinder: They have been learning about Kelso’s Choices. The goal of the program is to teach students several positive ways to deal with a disagreement or conflict at school. They can solve “small problems” (friend isn’t sharing, someone cut in line, etc.). To do this, we are asking students who have minor problems to try at least two of the following ideas:
- Go to another game
- Respectfully talk it over and listen to each other
- Walk away from the problem
- Ignore the problem behavior
- Tell the person to stop the problem behavior
- Apologize
- Make a deal or compromise.
- Wait to cool off.
- Share and take turn.
These can even be used at home. J Kelso’s Wheel of Choices is attached for you to review and print out.
1st: They reviewed Kelso’s Choices, practiced them through role plays, and worked on “I” statements when trying to respectfully talk out a problem with a friend.
2nd: They have also reviewed Kelso’s Choices and practiced “I” statements. We recently finished a book called “A Bad Case of Tattle Tongue” by Julia Cook. The book helps address tattling and clever ways for students to understand the differences between unnecessary tattling and the necessity of warning others about important matters.
3rd: We finished a book called “Simon’s Hooks; A story about teases and put downs.”
4th & 5th: We have been talking about our personality types by taking a personality test, which was a modified version of True Colors. This test was originally created to categorize four basic learning styles using the colors blue, orange, gold and green to identify the strengths and challenges of these core personality types. Ask what color they are!
