Message from the Headteacher

Dear Families,

I would like to welcome everyone back to a new school year at Southwark Park. It has been a really great start to the term, with children working hard, showing our values and displaying a level of maturity and determination that makes all staff very proud.

We have started to get used to the ‘old’ but new routines and it has been lovely to see children and parents socialising with each other in the playground again. Please take the time to watch and read the year group videos and leaflets which can be found below and on the website. There is a lot of exciting learning and events happening this term so please check the calendar and twitter to keep up to date with everything going on.

We are looking forward to working with you this academic year.

Mr Vernalls

A Massive Welcome to New Staff and Students

This year, we have a few new members of staff that we would like to welcome to the Southwark Park Primary School community! We hope that you make sure to introduce yourself as you see these members of staff at the beginning and end of the day.

  • Year 1 Class Teacher: Ms. Tyerman
  • Year 2 Class Teacher Long Term Supply: Ms. E
  • Year 5 Class TA: Zak

We also have a number of new children that have started during the month of September. Please ask your children if they have any new classmates and encourage your child to welcome these children and remind them how we can support and be friendly to new children at our school.

Sadly, this month we said goodbye to one of our teachers. Ms. Grant will be off for the rest of this year as she is expecting a baby. Although we will miss her greatly, we will look forward to welcoming her back once she ready. Last week we had an assembly to wish her the best of luck and we hope she enjoys the time she has with her newest member of her family.

Are you worried about online sexual abuse or the way someone has been communicating with you online? We have a new button on our school's website if you would like to report anything that you are concerned about. Please follow the link here.

Also, Childline has an information guide on how to remove a nude image that has been shared online. Again, you can follow the link here to find out how to use this resource. As a school we committed to teaching children about being safe online and this work is embedded into our weekly computing lessons.

MacMillian Coffee Morning

Thank you to the families that baked cakes for this years MacMillian Coffee Morning. There were many delicious cakes on sale and it was wonderful enjoying a cup of coffee or tea with those of you that stopped by.

As a school we raised £181.00 in cash donations and there were many more donations via the MacMillian mobile donation app. We will have many more fundraising opportunities throughout the year and look forward to having parents back in school to support these wonderful causes with us!

Big picture

We will have Bikeability back at school during the second half of autumn term. This course will be available for children in year 5 and year 6. This year, there will be an online form to complete and all the registration information will be sent to school once your child has been enrolled. If you require a paper registration form, we will have these available in the office. More information about Bikeability will be sent out to families on Monday 11th October.

Bikeability is the nationally recognised cycle training programme.

It’s about acquiring the practical skills to cycle safely and with confidence on today’s roads. For children to participate in school Bikeability training, they must have basic riding skills (without stabilisers). Free individual training may also be available for you and your child in your area and is a great way to get your child riding prior to the course commencing, so they can then participate. Check the Cycle Confident website at for details on our individual and family group training.

What if my child does not have a bike?

Cycle Confident may be able to arrange for your child to borrow a bike for the training. Please check this with your school.

This year for Harvest, we will be collecting donations starting Monday 4th October through to Monday 11th October. There will be a collection in the main entry for any donations of non-perishable items at the beginning and end of day. Please feel free to to drop off any items if you are able to donate.

On Monday the 11th October, we will have a school assembly and the year 6 children will deliver the donations to the church. We hope to collect as much as possible so families in the local community can be supported.

After School Club

After school clubs are up and running again for children across the school. This terms we are offering the following after school clubs.

  • Monday: Gymnastics (Years 1 and 2)
  • Wednesday: Street Dance (Years 3 and 4)

In the coming weeks, we will also be offering a gardening and chess club. Children in years 3 and 4 will have the opportunity to learn about gardening and help curate the school's garden. Years 5 and 6 will be able to hone their strategic chess skills that they started to develop in year 4. Please look out for these letters in your child's book bag as we will be allocating slots on a first come basis.

We also offer after school child care Monday - Friday from 3:25 - 5:30 and is open to children from reception to year 6. This club is £10.00 a session and children are offered a snack and the opportunity to engage in many exciting and engaging extracurricular activities. If you are interested in enrolling your child, please stop by the main office for more information.
