Miss Foster's Fabulous Firsties

September 2020 Month in Review

Dear Parents,

Welcome to first grade! It has been an exciting and busy few weeks of school and I am happy to share that our first month in review! I hope both you and your students have adjusted to our new school routine - I know I'm so happy to have students back in the classroom! It's going to be a wonderful year!

Language Arts: In September, we stay busy reviewing many skills learned last year in Kindergarten. We are reviewing each letter of the alphabet, the sounds they make, and words that begin with them. This review period provides a strong base for us to build our phonics work upon in first grade. Additionally, we'll be reviewing some power words from kindergarten. It is imperative that your child be able to recognize these words in 3 seconds or less because this allows them to spend less time decoding while reading and more time focusing on comprehension. Differentiated lists of power words for your child will start coming home sometime next week, probably on Wednesday. I have several fun ways to practice power words listed on my classroom website if you're looking for a more exciting way to practice them than just flashcards. I'll also practice them with your child when he/she is in the classroom and those students working virtually will be assigned practice activities for them on seesaw.

Math: We are learning about counting and comparing numbers, counting on, number bonds, finding a missing addend, solving story problems and adding within 10. We will soon start using a Math Workshop model to ensure that all of the students are being instructed at their own pace and level. We will be learning how to play various math games to support our learning and using technology to enhance our learning of the subject.

Homework: In first grade, your child’s only homework is to read. Please make sure your child is reading for a minimum of 15-20 minutes a night, which can include your child listening to you read stories to him/her. Please record the minutes your child read on the monthly calendar that is sent home and return the calendar at the end of each month. Your child will also begin receiving a list of 5 power words a week soon that should be practiced daily. Your child will be assessed on his/her ability to recognize these words in 3 seconds or less a week after receiving them to practice.

September is also a time for us to get to know one another and our classroom! We will be doing many activities to help us become a classroom community of learners! Additionally, those that have returned to school are practicing using "zombie" arms when walking in the hallway so there is plenty of space between us and and the person in front of us and "airplane" arms when we're in a horizontal line getting ready to play games like Red Light Green Light or having a race outside. We have also learned how our "airplanes" stay in their own runway to make sure we've got plenty of space between us and we use "airplane" arms in the classroom to make sure we're all in our own bubble space around our desks. We're having a wonderful time getting to know our classmates, getting used to these new routines and procedures, and we are all looking forward to a fabulous year! :)

Lastly, THANK YOU so much to all of the families for their support in this new adventure in education! I know this has been a stressful time for many of you as you're trying to work and manage the learning of one or multiple children, but I want to assure everyone that you're doing amazing! The students continue to impress me daily with the independence they have gained using technology already, whether it is knowing how to get to our class zoom, monitoring their timers, getting to the bitmoji rooms or logging into our learning tools and the apps we're using, they're doing a great job and that is all thanks to your support. Also, thank you for your patience with us as we continue to experience some glitches and figure out the best ways to meet with both in person and virtual kiddos at the same time.
