Stone Bank School
Reaching Out ~ September 21,2018
From Mrs. Davies
Dear Stone Bank Families:
In the next couple of weeks our students will practice their first Lockdown drill of the year. Per school board policy, we will practice these drills at least twice a year. The safety of our students, staff and visitors is a top priority. Below are some of the ways the staff at Stone Bank is working to ensure a safe learning environment for everyone at our school.
Increased Building Security
Last May, Governor Walker approved a school safety bill that created grants for districts to increase school security. Our district was awarded $20,000. Those funds will be used to add additional security cameras inside and outside of our building. We will also use the funds to modify the locks on all classroom doors so that teachers are able to quickly lock the doors in the event of a school shooter without going outside of their classroom.
Mandatory Staff Training
All staff members have been trained in the ALICE protocol as our response to an active shooter situation. ALICE stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Evacuate. Years ago, the recommendation from law enforcement was to remain in the classroom, hide in a corner and wait for law enforcement to arrive. Now, staff is empowered to barricade their classroom doors, fight back or evacuate the building if they are able.
Later in the school year, our staff will receive Trauma Sensitive Schools training. This is a requirement by the state for all schools receiving funds from the school safety grant.
Student Training
Prior to our first lockdown drill, Mrs. Zdrojewski and the classroom teachers will review the procedures for the drill. All explanations are done at an age appropriate level being sensitive not to unnecessarily scare our youngest students.
Parents often ask how they can prepare their child for a lockdown drill. The most important thing children need to know is to trust that their teacher is going to keep them safe and listen carefully to their directions. Here is an article that offers other tips for parents.
As a parent, I know how scary (and sad) it is that our children have to be prepared for the possibility of this type of violence. As a school administrator, I believe knowledge is power and take my role very seriously to empower teachers and students to have the tools necessary to remain safe in the event of a crisis.
If you have any questions or concerns about our safety procedures, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
Have a great weekend,
Lynn
Stone Bank School to Celebrate Unity Day
Wednesday, October 24, 2018
What is Unity Day? It’s a day everyone can come together—in schools, communities, and online—and send one large ORANGE message of support, hope, and unity to show that we are together against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.
What are your true colors when it comes to bullying? If you care about safe and supportive schools and communities, make your color ORANGE on Unity Day. Wear ORANGE to school on Wednesday, Oct. 24th. It can be an orange T-shirt, hat, wristband, socks, or even shoelaces.
We encourage staff and students who do not have an orange t-shirt to wear, or are looking for one, to buy a PACER exclusive 2018 UNITY DAY shirt available for $12.00 at represent.com/pacer They do have youth sizes. Order soon to ensure it arrives before Oct. 25th!
Student Council will also have the students sign an ORANGE banner on that day. The banner will be a pledge that we are a school that believes...“Together Against Bullying — United for Kindness, Acceptance, and Inclusion!”
You can find all of this information and much more by visiting www.pacer.org/bullying/nbpm/unity-day.asp

Social Emotional Learning in 8th Grade
8th Graders in SEL class have been very busy learning and discussing decision making. One way that we are learning to do this was by playing a game called Spend and Save. Each group was saving for a cell phone. They had to draw a card, identify the influence behind the decision to spend and save their money and move along the game board accordingly. They learned that peers, family, goals, media, and many other things influence our decisions. Then they were reminded how important it is to STOP and THINK before making a decision, and that they are responsible for the decisions that they make. These 8th graders had fun playing this game from our Too Good for Drugs curriculum and learned some great things along the way.

We need your help to produce the 8th grade musical!
Stone Bank is putting together its annual 8th grade musical, and we have no funding for props and costume supplies. We rely on the community, families, thrifting, and our own ingenious re-purposing for help. This being said, your donations elevate the production quality and overall enjoyment of the performance for the eighth graders and the audience alike. Please check out the list below containing items that are necessary for this production. Any help you can offer would bring us endless appreciation, and help our hard work come to life in a superb production.
