💌 Message From the Superintendent
As we move into the last full month of the school year and I continue to write these short pieces for the newsletter, I’ve been rumbling on something I think we all see everyday. That is failure, but also getting back up after a failure. I fail everyday. Some days I fail at getting up early for a workout. Some days I fail at packing a lunch. Some days my failures are bigger and more public. Everyday I fail at something. That does not stop me from setting my alarm for 4:30 AM the next day. I’m reading the book Rising Strong by Brene Brown. The book is about resiliency and rising after a failure. While it is a great book for me as an adult educator, I’m reading this book thinking how much this will change the discussions I have with my children as they grow up and experience the world. We as parents never want our children to fail or face adversity. We want our children to be happy, learn, and go through life earning what they deserve and never getting the short end of the stick. Yet, as we have gone through life, we know that is not how the world works. There is great value in talking with our children about how they face adversity and how they rise after a failure. This quote from the book resonated with me, “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” Whether it is a big failure or a small failure, it is how we (our children included) rise after the failure that decides our fate. In my mind, this is applicable in our conversations with children no matter if the adversity is a classmate not wanting to play with him/her or earning a lower than desired grade on a test or any other failure. When we have discussions on rising strong along the way, we teach our students how to face adversity and not be reduced by it.
