Hey Dude, Nice Shoes is THIS WEDNESDAY! Check it out!
Carolyn Brown, of Hey Dude, Nice Shoes, will be presenting to parents on Wednesday, September 19, at 6:30 pm in the PAC. Her presentation focuses on proactive and effective supports and solutions for parents on issues such as bullying and cyber-bullying. If you missed her amazing presentation last year, you will want to make plans to attend!
Carolyn Brown started speaking to groups about parenting perspective about six years ago. A word kept bubbling up in her discussions...Bullying. She would hear it on the radio, read it in the headlines and see it on the news.
Why is this suddenly such an epidemic and WHAT makes it different now?
In the past two years she has developed an anti-bullying/ pro-kindness workshop for students and their parents. "Hey Dude, nice shoes" is a presentation geared at educating parents about the who, what, when, where, whys and hows of Bullying. She has traveled all over the state delivering this message to thousands of students and their parents. Her goal is to educate and inspire children and adults alike to be the change and make a positive difference in our world. She covers everything from basic definitions and policies to recent legislation pertaining to bullying in schools. Through personal stories...and some hilarious pictures...she makes one relatable point - we are all human. We all are fighting a battle that no one knows anything about and we all can take a moment to be kind.

Meet Our Staff! All of our teachers at LVMS are amazing and we want you to get to know them a little bit better! Each week we will interview two staff members with some basic questions as well as some questions that were requested by students.
Allie Dement, 6th Grade Math
Where are you originally from? I was born and raised in Conroe, Texas.
What led you to become a teacher? How long have you been in education? I've been in education 20 years. I've had many wonderful teachers throughout my school career, but the one that inspired me the most was my 7th grade teacher Ms. Dwyer. Through her guidance, I found the love for math and decided that's what I wanted to teach.
Tell us about your family. My husband, Darrell, and I have been married 3 years. We have two beautiful girls still at home. Julia is an 8th grader here at the middle school and Laney is in 7th grade at Cedar Park Middle School.
What are your favorite hobbies? So many favorite hobbies...top 5: family time, running, fishing, cooking/eating, camping.
What is your favorite football team? Hmmm, favorite football team? I'm Texan through and through, so Texans and Cowboys for sure.
What is your favorite place to go on vacation? My favorite vacation spot is anywhere tropical. I love the beach! I've been to many Caribbean Islands. The Pacific Islands are on my bucket list.
Have you always loved math? Yes, I've ALWAYS loved math. Not only did I study math in college, but I get to teach it every single day- so fortunate.
Why did you choose to teach 6th grade math at Lago Vista Middle School? Although I loved teaching fourth grade, after 17 years I was ready for a change. It's wonderful and challenging to teach a slightly higher-level math. I'm grateful for the opportunity.
Pieter Duplooy - Band Director
Where are you originally from? I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, however, I only lived there for one month and moved to Houston. My dad’s whole family still lives over there though. Fun place to visit!
What led you to become a teacher? How long have you been in education? I love working with students and being a part of shaping the future. I have always believed that education is the most important tool to be successful in life. I have been teaching for eight years now.
Tell us about your family. Besides my cat, Ian, my mom, Debbi, lives in Belton - about an hour north of here. I lost my dad on the last day of school last year, but still know he is around!
What are your favorite hobbies? I enjoy movies, music, cooking, traveling (when I have the time and money), and college sports (Go Baylor).
What is your favorite food? Tex-Mex… no question.
What got you interested in music? I grew up in a musical household. My mom was a singer and played piano. I always grew up singing in the church choir and started band in 6th grade. Music and teaching led me to be a band director and doing the two things I love each day!
What is your favorite meme?
See below!
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up? I always thought I was going to be a city planner growing up, until I realized how much math it takes to be successful. Yeah… math.
