From the Principal's Desk
Welcome to the F. A. M. I. L. Y. !!!

P.J. Fleck, one of the great motivators and coaches in college football, uses this acronym with his teams as a way to promote and build culture. In sports, the goal is championship banners hanging in facilities - a legacy. The first time I heard this acronym I was blown away. This is a simple, yet profound reminder of where we should keep our focus.
One of the things that I love about my job is the satisfaction I get from being a part of a group of educators that love what they do and show it. So what is love? One way we might look at love is from the lens of love as sacrifice. If we are willing to sacrifice for others, we will have the privilege to watch something magical happen. People of character make sacrifices for the greater good. They often give freely and without expectations because they are more excited about contributing to the success of others than their own.
Our educators sacrifice a great deal on a daily basis. They often spend time away from their own children to contribute to the development of other children. I know personally that it can be difficult to give at home if I’m depleted from navigating student issues at work. Parents also work and sacrifice in myriad ways to ensure that the family is able to be successful. A parent goes through burnout and fatigue that eats away from within just to ensure the well-being of the child. Business people will sometimes give away profits to local or national causes to build or maintain a strong community.
A thought to rally behind is that “we live in deeds, not in years”. We don’t have the luxury of do-overs in life. If we neglect opportunities to sacrifice for others our lives will likely be forgotten. As we strive to live lives of meaning, I encourage you to think of the F.A.M.I.L.Y. acronym and how you might be able to deposit into the lives of others. It may not lead to materialistic wealth, or banners in a stadium, but it will lead to a wonderful existence and lasting legacy as you “carve your name on hearts, not tombstones”.
INTENTIONAL THINKING:
- Who made sacrifices for you to be where you are today?
- If you are aware of these sacrifices, what is an appropriate response?
- How can you plan out some next steps to be intentional about leaving a legacy through sacrifice?

Feeling Word Units
This year, your child is learning about the RULER approach for social-emotional learning, which is designed to help students recognize, understand, label, express and regulate their emotions in productive ways. Below you will find overview videos from the district PBIS Specialists explaining your child's upcoming RULER Feeling Word Units. This document can also be found on the district website. Students in grade K-5 will learn eight new feeling words using the RULER curriculum this year. The units of study focus on expanding emotion vocabulary as well as discussing action and thought strategies to proactively handle each emotion. Please reach out to your child’s building principal if you would like more information on their current unit of study. We appreciate your partnership as you engage in at home learning opportunities with your child.
