Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term - Issue 13

Big picture

A word from Mr Broom

It's been an incredibly busy week in school with the highlight being our Christmas Fair. I'd like to say a massive thank you to our wonderful Friends of Sherburn Hungate team who work tirelessly to raise invaluable funds for the children of our school. The fair this year was busier than ever so thank you to everyone who came to support us. I'm also delighted to announce that the Manic Street Teachers gig raised a whopping £18.02! Way more than anyone anticipated!

Rehearsals for our festive productions are also well underway and I must say, you're in for a real treat if you're coming to one of the nativity performances. Thank you to the staff who are working incredibly hard to make this Christmas tradition a huge hit.

Y6 Uniform and Responsibilities Reminder

Having spoken at length to Miss Mackay this week regarding the uniform in Y6 and class responsibilities, we have noticed an increase in children who are:

- Not wearing the red Y6 tie

- Wearing inappropriate footwear (fashion boots, trainers, etc.)

- Not completing tasks involving school diaries.

It's really important that our oldest children in school demonstrate and model the expected behaviour of all our pupils, and things need to change for some of our Y6 pupils.

Parent Helpers Required

Our teachers would really like to know if any of our parents / carers / grandparents would like to support us by spending some time in school reading with children. If you can give an afternoon, please let your class teacher know. They will be very grateful!

Nut Allergies

If your child brings either a snack or a pack up to school, please help us to protect some of our children who have nut allergies by checking that the products you send with them do not contain any nuts. Thank you.

School Attendance

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 2 children who are our attendance champions in school this week with 100%!

Our average attendance this week is 96.2% which is back above the national average. Well done everyone!

We have a small number of children whose attendance is well below the national expectations. These children are known as persistently absent when their attendance falls below 90%. I will be making telephone calls to parents of these children.

Thank you for your continued support with our attendance drive. It is really appreciated.

Infection Control Information

You may be aware that some schools in the area have been closed this week following an outbreak of suspected norovirus (winter vomiting bug); we have had a very small number of cases of sickness and / or diarrhoea in school this week. Please remember if a child suffers from diarrhoea OR sickness they must be kept at home and not brought back into nursery or school until 48 hours after their symptoms have disappeared.

If your child suffers diarrhoea or vomiting you will be called and asked to collect your child as soon as practicable. It is vital you co-operate with this to prevent the spread of infection to others. Prevention is always best. Please remind children that thorough hand washing and drying is the most important factor in preventing the spread of such illness. Although hands may look clean, germs picked up by touching solid items and surfaces can be passed on when you touch something, someone or food. Hand hygiene is important, even if you are not unwell, and also helps to prevent the spread of other conditions such as coughs, colds, impetigo and threadworm.

Mobiles on Site

Our teachers have planned exciting lessons for all our children and when they leave school, we're confident that they will want to share their day with you. Conversation is really important to your child's development and for this reason, we're asking that you refrain from using your phone on the school site at drop off and pick up times.
