The Leopard Tale

January-2022

Principal's Points

Welcome back! We are so happy to have our Leopards back for a magical new year. We are especially excited to welcome our students returning from temporary virtual learning.

Please join me in thanking our awesome CFISD Board of Trustees. Cypress Fairbanks ISD is fortunate to have an amazing school board committed to our students, staff and community. They volunteer countless hours each year working to ensure the success of every student.

CFISD has set aside January as School Board Appreciation Month. Please join us in thanking the following School Board members for the countless hours they give our District and our students. To honor each board member, Andre’ Elementary will dedicate a library book in each member’s name to honor the dedication they show to our students. Thank you again:

News From the Nurse

Hello Families,

The school clinic has a need for new boy’s underwear in all sizes and new/gently used pants for boys & girls in sizes 6-12. We use these items to reclothe students who have accidents during the school day.

Also, I wanted to share some information regarding the COVID-19 vaccine since many elementary students are now receiving it.

What are the side effects of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines for kids?

Children given the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines had side effects similar to those experienced by people age 16 and older. The most reported side effects include:

· Pain where the shot was given

· Fatigue

· Headache

· Chills

· Muscle pain

· Fever

· Joint pain

· Swollen lymph nodes

· Nausea

· Decreased appetite

Similar to adults, children have side effects within 2 days after vaccination that typically last 1 to 3 days. More children reported these side effects, except for injection site pain, after the second dose of the vaccine. However, some people have no side effects.

After your child is given a COVID-19 vaccine, he or she will be monitored for 15 to 30 minutes to see if he or she has an allergic reaction that requires treatment.

It isn't recommended that you give your child an over-the-counter pain reliever before vaccination to prevent side effects. It's OK to give this kind of medication after your child gets a COVID-19 vaccine. (Mayo Clinic, 2021)

Healthfully Yours,

Spelling Bee

Last week we held our Andre' Spelling Bee for our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. We started with 23 contestants who earned their way to the bee by scoring the highest on their qualifying test among all three grade levels. The competition concluded with our spelling champion, Jourdain Kormah, and our runner up, Maximo Vargas. Jourdain will go on to represent our campus in the district spelling bee on February 2nd at the Berry Center. We look forward to seeing him SHINE! We are so proud of Jourdain and Maximo as well as the other 21 students who participated in our Andre' Spelling Bee!

Counselors' Corner

The Core Essential Value for January is self-control. Self-control means choosing to do what you should even when you don’t want to.

Ask your student:

  • Have you ever wanted to keep playing video games at night but your mom or dad said it was time to get a bath and get ready for bed? How did you act? What did you say?
  • Think of someone you know that lacks self-control. Think of someone that you know that has great self-control. What are the main differences in their attitudes and behaviors?

Career Week:

Calling all parents!!! We will be having career week in April and are in need of parent volunteers to present one day to Andre’ students. Please email brian.finnerty@cfisd.net if you are interested in presenting a short (10 min.) presentation to students about your career! We need all different types of careers and trades, so please email if you’re at all interested. We greatly appreciate all help!

Words From the Library

On Monday, January 10th, pre-k and kindergarten had a visit from Mother Goose! Students enjoyed a wonderful program with stories and activities.

Notes From the Front Desk

Absences

If your child is absent, please send a note on the first day of your child’s return to school stating the reason for the absence. Thank you.

Transportation Changes

If a child’s end-of-day transportation changes, the parent/guardian must send a note with the date, necessary changes and parent/guardian signature. If a note is not received, the usual method of transportation will be followed.

For safety purposes, no changes will be made after 3:45 P.M. and PHONE CALLS or E-MAILS CANNOT BE ACCEPTED.
