MENTAL HEALTH INFORMATION
Youth Mental Health First Aid Action Plan
The Mental Health First Aid Program provides an action plan on how to help a person in a mental health crisis or with mental health challenges or disorders. Its mnemonic is ALGEE.
YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID ACTION PLAN
- Action A - Assess for risk of suicide or harm
- Action L - Listen non-judgmentally
- Action G - Give reassurance and information
- Action E - Encourage appropriate professional help
- Action E - Encourage self-help and other support strategies
These actions do not necessarily need to be followed in a fixed order. They are ordered in this way purely to aid in remembering them. The first-aider has to use good judgment about the order and the relevance of these actions and needs to be flexible and responsive to the person they are helping.
Action A: Assess for Risk of Suicide or Harm
Possible crisis might include the following:
- The young person may harm themselves by attempting suicide, using substances to become intoxicated, engaging in non-suicidal self-injury, or attempting to achieve extreme weight loss.
- The young person experiences extreme distress, such as a panic attack or a reaction to a traumatic event.
- The young person's behavior is very disturbing to others (They become aggressive or lose touch with reality).
If the young person appears to be at risk of harming self or others, the first-aider MUST seek professional help immediately.
Action L: Listen Non-judgmentally
- Allow the listener to really hear and understand what is being said.
- Make it easier for the young person to feel they can talk freely about their problems without being judged.
- Respect the youth's culture.
Action G: Give Reassurance and Information
Action E: Encourage Appropriate Professional Help
Action E: Encourage Self-Help and Other Support Strategies
After providing mental health first aid to a young person who is in distress, you may feel worn out, frustrated, or even angry. You may need to deal with the feelings and reactions you have set aside during the encounter. It can be helpful to find someone to talk to about what has happened, but remember to respect the young person's right to privacy; do not share their name or any personal details that might identify them.

Starting December 1st we are implementing custom lanyards to increase visual security on the DCSC campuses.
- Visitor lanyards are white with red lettering
- Volunteer lanyards are maroon with gray lettering
- Substitute Teacher lanyards are gray with black lettering
The lanyards will also include a safety information card for the guest.
