Student Learning Outcomes
What is a Student Learning Objective?
A Student Learning Objective (SLO) is a measurable, long-term goal of academic growth that represents a portion of a teacher’s impact on student learning. ... Essentially, SLOs represent the process of gathering and analyzing student data, using that data to set student growth goals, and then assessing whether students have met those goals at the end of instruction. What is new about SLOs is that they offer a formalized, collaborative process for using student growth data in evaluations, especially for non-tested grades and subjects.
Why are SLOs Important?
Teaching Practice The heart of SLOs—setting goals for students and measuring progress towards those goals—is all about good teaching practice. Moreover, using SLOs gives administrators an opportunity to let evaluation results drive professional learning opportunities for teachers.
High School teachers will use their first semester Formative Assessment Data for one of their Student Learning Outcomes, or SLOs (we turn in two each year). These completed forms are due by the end of the day on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16.
You can reference the 'Cheat Sheet' document HERE - see your HS mailbox for a hard copy of the form and how to fill it out.

Let's Talk
**I'm working on getting meetings rescheduled. These will go into February. (Thanks, Winter...) **
I'm working on scheduling meetings with HS teachers to chat about how the first semester went and what goals you have for your second semester.
When we meet, I'd like for you to update your 2023-24 Teacher Choice Growth Plan, Building Level Growth Plan, and District Level Growth Plan. Please have 1st and 2nd Quarter columns complete and include your 3rd Quarter Goals/info as well.
When you have updated your Growth Plans, please print a copy and put it in my mailbox BEFORE our meeting.
Tell Your Story
The February Board of Education meeting will take place on Monday, February 26 at 4:30 pm.
Each teacher/sponsor/coach is expected to enter a brief update for each of their courses/organizations by 12:00 pm on Monday, February 26.
Make sure you include your class numbers/enrollment in your report.
Artisan Teacher Spotlight
As I come into your classroom to observe, you'll see that I'll often point out one of Rutherford's 23 Artisan Teaching Themes I've noticed you using. Throughout the school year, I will highlight various themes.
Receipts Required
Make sure to turn in an itemized receipt any time you use your P-card.
You can take a picture and email it to Angela Lemmon at alemmon@slaterschools.net.
Hudl's Format Changes
Our streaming services with Hudl will no longer be going to the Slater School Streaming account on Youtube. All events will now be found on:
https://fan.hudl.com/usa/mo/slater/organization/14160/slater-high-school
This link has been added to our Youtube account's bio in order to send our fans to the appropriate location for games. Fans will also be able to download the "Hudl Fan" app on their smartphones, search Slater High School, and watch the game that way.
Field Trip Tasks
TRANSPORTATION
There is a new google form (button below) to request the use of a bus, fields are mandatory for us to schedule buses and drivers correctly. Our drivers wear many hats, and as the year gets busier we need to make sure we are scheduling correctly to avoid overlap or last minute scheduling.
FOOD SERVICES
Please make sure when your class is attending a field trip to fill out the google doc (below) for breakfast and lunch counts so the kitchen knows how many meals to prepare for. Please give the kitchen at least a week's notice.
What staff member deserves a shout out?
Take a minute to let me know all about it by filling out THIS FORM or clicking the banner above.
Students, Parents, and Staff can give a shout out to any Slater Schools employee! We'll make sure they receive a copy of it and will look for ways to share them with you throughout the year as well.
Let's get to bragging about all the good people around here!
OLD BUSINESS
The 411 on AMI Days
Did you know that DESE allows Districts to apply for the ability to utilize Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) days? If approved, Districts may use up to five days of virtual instruction in the event of a school closure. Districts do not have to make up missed school days that were used as AMI days. Snow days do have to be made up, if the District's calendar does not include a surplus of the required 1044 hours of instruction. (Our calendar has a snow day surplus of several days built in.)
If an AMI day is to be used, Admins will ask teachers to prepare online or paper assignments for students to complete on the day(s) out. Teachers will need to communicate with students (in class, via email, Google Classroom, etc.) regarding what the assignment is and the method of access (online, paper packets, etc.). Completed work will be due upon our return to school. Each HS student has been issued a Chromebook and Charger. If a student does not have access to internet at home, he/she needs to talk to their teachers about receiving paper assignments or an extension to complete work. If you aren't sure if their claim is accurate, talk to me or Lauren about the student's access. We will confirm, debunk, or investigate.
Turning Up the Communication
(From Teffany Sample's 10/30/23 email)
Good Morning Wildcats,
The [HS] student council will make a weekly announcement on the first day of the week at 0830. If you would like to add anything to the announcement please have the subject, time, place etc. to me by 1200 on the Thursday prior. Nearly anything goes i.e. fundraiser money due, after/before school meetings, practice time change etc.... [This information should pertain to HS students.]
Once we have the student council email set up I will send that out as the contact email for future announcements.
Thank you for your support,
Slater STUCO
Tending to Attendance
Please do not let students in any door after the tardy bell rings. They need to be signed in at one of the offices. Once the bell rings, students are marked absent, which triggers an immediate message to the parent, which in turn generates an immediate call from parents to one of the offices. At that point students have to be tracked down and matched with teachers to clear up each student's tardy/absence status. This has been an ongoing problem that causes many unnecessary attendance issues.
Party Planning Committee
As we discussed in the August Building Level meeting, teacher teams will plan this year's NWEA incentive days. See the groups below.
Fall Group: Bowling @Marshall, Movies @Campus
Winter Group: Bowling @Glasgow, Board Games @Campus
Spring Group: TBA
Transition Room Reminder
Don't forget to fill in the Transition Room Assignments document when you have a student in the Transition Room.
If you need access to the document, email Denise Audsley (daudsley@slaterschools.net) or call 222.
First Aid Supplies
If you need supplies for your fanny packs, please email Crystal Wiseman (cwiseman@slaterschools.net). Include what items you need in the message.
How Do I Enter A Discipline Referral? *UPDATED 9/18/23*
*I apologize for the change up, but Becky and I worked with Nicole to fix some settings in PowerSchool to be able to submit a referral through the INCIDENT option.
Here are the steps to enter a Referral:
- Go to the Student Information icon on the right hand side of your screen.
- Click on the last name of the student on the left side of your screen.
- Then go to the Select Screen dropdown on the top right of your screen.
- Select Submit Incident Entry.
- Enter the Incident Title (be sure to title it as Discipline Referral), date and time.
- Write your description in the Incident Detail section which should include details of the incident and where it happened.
- Submit. (It will say you have successfully submitted the incident.)
That's My Spot
Some of our HS Students are reporting being displaced by staff member vehicles. The cafeteria lot and spots north of the ECC doors are up for grabs for staff, students, and visitors.
Proper Protocol
The fanny packs in your rooms are for minor health care needs, ie. bandaids. If your pack is missing something please let the nurse know.
I have stopped several students wandering the halls on their phones who tell me they are heading to the nurse. I would suggest a hall pass that the nurse can sign off on noting the time they came and left. Way to much traffic in the halls during instruction time.

Being Intentional After Accidents
I have added a button at the bottom of this newsletter for both the student accident form and the Work Comp Form for your quick reference.
Visitors in the Building
Anyone who does not work for the District should be wearing a neon green lanyard while in the building.
We have some parents that are having a hard time dropping their babies off at the door and still wanting to walk them to their room and catching teachers off guard.
Please try to be outside of your classroom greeting students as they come in to help reduce some of these issues. Remember: If you see something, say something!
Thank you!
Expectations
The next dates are 10/24 & 10/25. Watch your email for more information.

2023-24 Lunch Duty Schedule
Lunch Duties
Expectations for HS Lunch Duty (above) include:
Salad Bar Supplies: Extra salad bar supplies will be kept in an upright cooler in Whitney's 'area' to make it easier for that day's person to keep an eye on supplies and keep it stocked. These are the people who are posted at the salad bar until the line is through. Tasks include making sure kids are getting appropriate portions, not making messes (make them clean up after themselves), and that the stations are stocked. Whitney is entering codes and numbers. She won't be restocking any longer. Once the kids are through the line, staff members can/should move about the room to supervise and finish their meal.
'Outside Area': During the winter months and in inclement weather, this person will keep an eye on condiments until the kids are through the line. That station will move to the North wall as well. Spare ketchup will be stored in the cooler with salad bar items and ala carte drinks. Gravy/sauce may have to be retrieved from the kitchen. Once the kids are through the line, staff members can/should move about the room to supervise and finish their meal.
Hallway Supervision: These people will continue to supervise the hallway until the line has moved past the servers. At that point, staff members can/should move about the room to supervise and finish their meal.
Please be sure to include lunch duty details in your sub plans.
Thank you for everything you do all day every day - including the logistics of making a 28 minute lunch period work. I appreciate you!
