November 2018 Issue
A Note From Our Principal
In November we plan to spotlight Service Month at C-A. Students will be encouraged to provide service to our local, regional and even world communities. We will be working with our community organizations to provide service opportunities for all our students throughout the year. We plan to promote this practice by asking every kid to "STRIVE FOR FIVE," meaning five hours of service. If you know of a group who needs volunteers, link HERE to a google form so that we may spread the word to our students.
Along with student volunteering opportunities, we need parents to help out with the PTO Book Fair. During the week of Nov. 5th, books will be on sale at a discounted rate. A portion of the proceeds support CE programs. If you can give an hour to check out books or help students with book selection, link HERE to sign up.
This November, we are thankful and grateful to have your support. Whether you have given your time at school, sold items in our Fall Fundraiser, baked for an event or even attended one of our events, it is these generous acts of kindness that keep our school a safe and fun place to learn and grow. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Unity Day @ CE
CE Staff and Students were encouraged to wear orange to school to show our support, hope, and unity against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Throughout the week, community service members read facts about bullying and how to stop it. Also, Magician Joe was here teaching our students how to use the B-A-N-D acronym:
B- Be a buddy not a bully
A- Avoid bad situations, Ask for help
N- Nobody deserves to be bullied
D- Don't join in, help instead
Please keep the discussion alive in your homes and let’s stop bullying in our schools! Make it ORANGE and make it end!

A Day in the Life....
On one day each autumn, thousands of students from New York City to Troy participate in the annual "A Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor" event. Students collect scientific information to create snapshots of the river at dozens of locations, then share their data via the web so they can better understand how their piece of the river fits into the larger Hudson estuary ecosystem. "A Day in the Life" is sponsored by DEC's Hudson River Estuary Program and produced with assistance from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University.
This year Mrs. Rausch took 20 fourth graders to the Coxsackie Boat launch on October 16th. They observed the river and collected data. Some of the data that was collected was: the salinity level and the pH level of the river water, how much dissolved oxygen was in the water, and how clear the water was. They also seined for fish, identified them and counted them (44 were caught and identified). A volunteer waded into the water to get a muck sample (a collection of mud from under the water) that the students could smell, dissect, and figure out what it was made up of.
Everyone enjoyed being at the river, although it did get a bit chilly with the wind gusting up to 10 mph. It was a great morning observing the river and collecting data. It’s amazing to think that about 6,000 other people from NYC to Troy were all doing the same thing on the same day. If you’d like to see the specific data collected at our site (river mile 123) or any of the other data collected that day go to this site: https://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/edu/k12/snapshotday/
The Author is Coming!
Author, Brendon Wenzel, will be spending the entire day with our students on Wednesday, November 7th. Brendan Wenzel is an author and illustrator with great affection for all things furred, feathered and scaly. His work has appeared internationally in magazines, animations and in several books. Brendan is a proud collaborator with many groups working to protect and conserve wild places and creatures. Link HERE to his website.

Are You Up To The Challenge?
Ready, Set, Go! The Trex Plastic Recycling Challenge has started out strong! The Trex Company is putting out a challenge to U.S. schools and parts of Canada to collect as many plastic bags and wrappings as possible this school year. The TREX Company takes these plastics and melts, mixes, and creates new materials like durable decking, park benches, and other long lasting plastic items. Each child in our school will soon be sent home with a magnet that shows some of the items they can collect and bring in. For example, some items to consider collecting are clean, and dry: plastic grocery bags, bread and cereal bags, pellet stove bags, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, and plastic wrappings from toilet tissue, paper towels, cases of water, and bulk packaged items. Can we all work together to become the best recyclers we can be? An informational magnet will sent home soon. Refer to it, and……..keep the plastic coming!
