Class Dojo
Things continue to be moving along just great in our classroom! Many parents have connected on Class Dojo and are able to see the points their child is earning each day as well as the pictures and videos I post of what we are up to in the classroom.
If you have not yet connected and would like to, please reply to this email and let me know and I will gladly send you an invite straight to your email, thanks!
All School Picnic
Friday, September 14th, we will have an all school picnic as our first PBIS reward for the year. I will send an email on Thursday letting you know if your child ordered a school sack lunch for the day or if you'll need to send one from home. Thank you!
Curriculum Updates
Language Arts
We are finishing up beginning of the year assessments in language arts this week. Next week, we will be able to get into our normal routine of our reading groups. This week we are practicing the long vowel sound of a and i spelled with a "bossy" e on the end (cake, hike). The "bossy" e makes the vowel say its name. We will read Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon and learn about the author's purpose when writing a text. We will also use context clues to figure out the meaning of multiple meaning words.
Everyone has done fantastic on our first two spelling tests! The words are getting harder so students may need to study more than they have the first two weeks. We are on lesson 3 this week and challenge lists will start with lesson 6.
Math
In math we are finishing up our first topic this week that has focused on fluently adding and subtracting within 20. Students used ten frames, connecting cubes, addition charts, and number lines in the unit. We have worked on solving word problems as well. Math homework will start in Topic 2 which we will start next week. It will not come home every day and the students have two school nights to complete it. For example, if it is assigned Monday it is due Wednesday or if it is assigned Thursday it is due Monday. Of course it can always be turned in the next day as well! I will work with the class on learning this routine, but please continue to have your child empty their take home folder each night as homework will come home in their folder.
Science
The students have loved the first few lessons in our hands-on Air and Weather unit. We have explored to see that air takes up space and have learned about air resistance with our parachutes. This week we will work with syringes and connecting tubes to see what we can discover about air.
Social Studies
In our first lesson, the students learned that a community is a place where we live, work, play, and solve problems. Ask your child if they remember our actions for each of those parts! We worked in groups to design our own communities that are on display in the hallway for you to see at our Open House on September 24th. Our next lesson will focus on the different types of communities: rural, suburban, and urban.
